Completed.Thanks.Does188 Wigan Road still exist.
« on: Sunday 08 February 09 10:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
My Gt Gt Uncle Thomas Howil (should read Howell) was a boarder with a Jones family at 188 Wigan Road, Ashton in Makerfield, on the 1901 Census .

I'm now trying to find out what happened to him after that date but no luck so far.

Does anyone know for sure if 188 Wigan Road  still exists and what type of property is it.

I have put this entry on the General Census lookup board but maybe this County board will be a better choice.

I'd appreciate any info

Thanks

barbara.

Barbara,

I suggest that you look for THOMAS HOWELL on the 1911 census site.  I believe that I may have found him on their index (in Wigan, born circa 1850).  To see the full transcription and/or image requires payment.  After locating ancestors via the index, I have paid to use the site and made several useful finds.

I hope that this suggestion does not violate copyright rules.

Good luck,

Kay in USA

PS  Have you checked deaths on FreeBMD?

Hi Emjaybee -

I entered Multimap and ,as you said, up it came. Thank you.

Hi Ellis21598 -

I used your link and entered Wiganworld and I found it really interesting because quite a few of my ancestors were born and lived around there.
So I'm keeping it in my favourites. Thank you.

Hi Rawley,

Thanks for the info and suggestions, I'll try for the 1911 Census,

I'm still hoping to that someone may be kind enough to send me a photo of 188 Wigan Road, it just helps to build a photo history around my ancestors.

All the help is much appreciated.

Barbara.

If you look at the Land Registry:
www.landregistry.gov.uk
and go to the "property search" tab at the top of the page, you should find details for:

188 Wigan Road
Ashton in Makerfield
WIGAN
WN4 9SX

You'll find that the Land Registry have three records for it - a freehold and two leaseholds.  The freehold appears to be shared with several adjoining properties - 182 to 204 Wigan Road are all under the same freehold, suggesting a major landlord owns them all.

The aerial photograph on the 'map enquiry' section of Land Registry's website appears to show that 188 is part of the terrace of properties on the east side of Wigan Road between Roseberry Road and Prince Street.  Judging by the aerial photograph, there are rear projecting wings to all the houses and two or three chimneys per house - it looks like a typical Victorian / Edwardian terrace - two receptions and a kitchen downstairs and three bedrooms upstairs.

Then looking at Wigan Borough Council's planning applications at www.wigan.gov.uk , there doesn't appear to have been any planning applications since 2002 at 188 itself, although there is an application A/06/67831 for 204 Wigan Road, which appears to be part of the same terrace.  Unfortunately when I try and look at the plans for that one their website crashes!

Then, if you go to www.rightmove.co.uk and search for properties for sale in WN4 9SX (and set it to 'this postcode only'), there are two properties currently for sale which appear to be part of that terrace or one of the immediately adjoining ones, which look very similiar in the aerial photographs - unfortunately it doesn't tell you which numbers the houses are, but the photos give you a good idea of what these houses look like.  It appears that one of the two currently for sale has converted one of its original three bedrooms into a luxury upstairs bathroom.

Hope that helps.

Hello Richard,

Thanks ever so much for your detailed reply it's great.

I've visited all 3 sites you mentioned and can see now, from the photo include in 'Right Move' , just what type of property it is and was in Thomas Howells' time.

I really appreciate your time spent in getting the information together for me Richard,

Thanks again

Glad to be of help - if you want to keep the pictures from Rightmove remember to save them now, as they could be taken down at any time without notice if the houses are sold or taken off the market.
