Hi thanks for the reply

So far all I know about Catherine Flynn is that she married John Donovan in Aldgate, London in 1858 aged 17. Her father Daniel was dead (according to the certificate) and I don't know who her mother was although her name might have been Catherine. On the 1861 and 1871 census Catherine just gave her place of birth as Ireland.

I've now found what I think are my Flynns in the 1851-1881 census.

In 1851 Daniel Flynn is lodging with the family of Catherine McCarthy at Crown Court (bad writing but I think that's what it says). He is aged 40 and described as a Labourer. With him are:

Ellen - his wife
Catherine - his daughter

Catherine married John Donovan in 1858 and Daniel died before then.

I tracked Ellen down today on the 1861 census living at 49 Cartwright Squart, St Boltoph without Aldgate. With her are:

Francis - her son
John - her son
Francis - her brother in law.

I also found them in 1871 and then found Francis (the son) in 1881 with his wife.

The mystery here now is the ages. The ages of Francis and John remain fairly constant in the case of the two sons:

1861
Francis is 23
John is 20

1871
Francis is 32
John is 29

Also they are still at the same location in 1871 (they are at 48 rather than 49 though) so it's definitely the same family. However Ellen’s age seems to vary somewhat:

On the 1851 census she is down as 36 making her born c1815
On the 1861 census she said she was 48 making her born c1813

That is reasonably consistent yet on the 1871 census she is down as 63 which makes her born in c1808.

Well at least it’s a bit further on. Now if I can track down the christenings of Daniel and Francis (1829) I might get a clue where they are from originally.

Found Daniel and Ellen's son Francis on the 1891 census today and according to that he was born in DUBLIN!?
