ROE OF HORSHAM/SURREY/SUSSEX
« on: Saturday 07 February 09 22:06 GMT (UK) »
From the 1911 census I think I have found my gt grandfather Herbert George Roe/Rowe/Row who at this time appeared to living away from home as he was not with any parents.  It was stated that he was aged 25 born Horsham, Surrey - Occupation Assisting in Business Fishmonger Assistant.  From his marriage certificate which took place later that year in 1911 it also states that he is 25 and a Fishmongers Assistant, he stated that his fathers name is also Herbert George Roe (Dec'd) no occupation is mentioned.

I would be grateful if someone would kindly look at the 1891 and 1901 census to see if they are able to locate him.  I have looked myself but am unable to match up for certain and I dont want to presume.  From a couple of websites there is a birth registration for a Herbert Roe albeit in 1883 Horsham Sussex - Im aware that people tended to lie about ages so my mind is open that his age in 1911 could be wrong??

If anyone is able to shed anymore light on this person, I would be extremely grateful.

Regards. ::)

Hi troods

Thank you very much - I agree with you, that this could be my guy, even though the birth year differs??, I think I may have also found him in the 1891 census and if this is him he was living with parents called Herbert Frank Roe and Caroline.  Trouble is and going back to his marriage certificate it did state that his father was Herbert George and at the time he married in August 1911 his father was dec'd.  After a little further research I found a death registered in 1918 for a Herbert F Roe in Berkshire could be a coincidence, but now doubtful again that this is my guy?

Family story says that my Herbert came from a family of Gentry - could this be him, this Herbert Frank Roe seems to have a job of high importance!!

Finally, I do have a memorial card which states that my Herbert died 5th March 1952 at the age of 68 which here indicates a birth year of 1883/1884??

Thank you for your time.
