Plymouth info please...
« on: Friday 06 February 09 13:38 GMT (UK) »
 Hi all  :)

My grandparents lived at 11 Tamar Terrace (now Normandy Way?), St Budeaux, from about 1913 to 1961...ish.  So no census information  :-\

James Theophilus Robertson (b 1874) was a marine engineer, and spent some time in Singapore working on one of the dry docks.  Probably during the interwar years.

Catherine Isabella Robertson (wife b 1883) worked, I think, at the Co-op in the soft furnishings dept, and as a prototype interior designer advising the well-heeled on furniture and furnishings.

That's all I know.  Does anyone have any advice about how I can find out more about where they worked etc?

Thanks in anticipation  :)

Hi

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

I lived in Plymouth for over 20 years  :o

The largest Co-op in Plymouth is on Derry's Cross/New George Street. At the moment i can't think of any other branches that would have a furnishing dept.

It is highly likely that your grandfather worked at the naval Dockyard in Devonport:

I'm just thinking that the Derry's Cross Co-op would have been part of the post-WW2 development. The centre of Plymouth was practically destroyed during WW2 and the modern centre is a 1950s develpoment.

I'm not sure where the main co-op would have been before 1941  :-\

There's a bit about it here:

I have many books on Old Plymouth - I shall search for you.

I'm pretty sure there was a Co-Op in Mutley Plain - quite a high brow shopping area at one time

Hi krissy

No more luck yet.  I'm interested to hear that there was a co-op store in St Budeaux, but haven't been able to find anything out about it.  Any more info really gratefully received :)  Thanks so much!

did a little bit of digging for you and found that the supermarket has been renamed to plymco , its still part of the co-op its situated on 2 victoria road, st budeaux plymouth.maybe if you get in touch they can give you some advice as to whether they hold any old personel documents.
its got to be worth a try eh?
