Dear Fred
Phoebe R (william's widow) died 20/11/1886 in Portswood Road. In the 1861 Census she was recorded as a lodging house keeper at Chandos Street. In 1871 she was a retired lodging house keeper living with her daughter Elizabeth Archer (the address is unclear but it could be Portswood Road)
Frederick William R married Elizabeth Smart Rogers 9/2/1858 at the Above Bar Chapel, So'ton. He died 30/1/1917. She predeceased him 22/1/1891. She was buried on the Common 28/1/1891 in section B011 plot 248. Frederick followed her into the same grave 5/2/1917.
As Trish pointed out above Frederick was on board the SS Cherbourg at the time of the 1881 census. I went down to the record office a few weeks ago and looked at the crew agreement for the first 6 months of that year. It said he had been on the same boat the year before, but I couldn't find him on that agreement. He is recorded as an able seaman. The boat went between So'ton, Le Havre, St. Malo, Cherbourg and Jersey in those 6 months.
In the 1891 census Frederick William was living in Priory Road with a son, George, a daughter, Annie, and a visitor. He was recorded as a civil assistant at the Ordnance Survey. In 1901 he is still in Priory Road but is now living on his own means. In 1911 he is still in Priory Road (different no.) and describes himself as a retired merchant seaman.
Hope this helps.
I apologise if you knew any of this already.
If there is anything else ask and I amy be able to help.
Joseph
