Clark(e)s of Malmesbury
« on: Thursday 05 February 09 13:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi I'm researching the Clark(e) branch of my family tree and have hit a brick wall, I'm hoping that someone out there can help me. I have an ancestor Charles Clark(e) who was born in Malmesbury around 1806 and was married to Mary White (also of Malmesbury) in 1828. I think Charles is related to Robert Clark(e) also born around 1806 (they may have been twin brothers) who married Elizabeth Neate in 1822. I'm looking for the parents of both Charles and Robert, can you help ?

My name is Brett Michael Clark and I have been researching my family the past few years. My great-grandfather was William Cope Clark who immigrated to Canada in 1884. His father's name was William Clark as well, and my research confirms that he was born in Malmesbury around 1805. I can find no record online (ancestry and familysearch.org) regarding his birth. He married his wife Eliza (maiden name Cope), she was from Tetbury. I do not know the year of their marriage, but by 1840 they were living in London, where 5 of their 7 children were born. The two youngest of their children were born in Canada on their homestead.

I found your site during my search and thought I would send along a hello. I am not sure whether we would share common ancestors, but my research shows that the population of Malmesbury in 1805 was around 1,500 people, so there is a good chance that we do.

Feel free to contact me if you think we may share the same ancestors!

I had a look at the transcribed baptisms for Malmesbury Abbey and I did not see a Charles, I may have missed him and will have another look. One possibility is that he was not baptized there.
  There is a Robert Clark  born 4-April-1802 and baptized 11-Jan-1807 along with his siblings; Elizabeth born 5-Nov-1797, Mary born 1-May-1800 and Eleanor born 7-Sep-1806.  All to Thomas & Eleanor

There is one other child baptized to Thomas & Eleanor in the timespan that I looked at and that is Elizabeth baptized 4-Sep-1808. I will check again in case I have missed anyone. When I have the chance I will broaden the timespan also.

Whilst I was there I also copied these baptisms;

Clark, Richard  Pinnell, s,of Jeremiah & Mary  born 13Sep1805 bap;29Sep1805

[Pinnell is a family name that occurs in Malmesbury]
Further to this I have just found that Jeremiah Clark married Mary Pinnell 15 April 1805.  Jeremiah was of Hawkesbury.

Just logged on and noticed the replies to the queries, thanks very much :)

I examined the list to see if any of your results would jive with my information. What I do know at this point according to the 1841, 1851, and 1861 censuses, he was born in 1805. I just received his death certificate last week, death was June of 1864 and listed his age at 59. This also puts the birth year at 1805. I was also thinking that if his birth was sometime during the latter half of 1805 the baptism could have possibly occurred in 1806.  I am trying to research what churches in the area exist as well. I am fairly certain that the Clark family would have been members of the church of England, due to the fact that when they came to Canada they were listed as Anglican.

It has been very difficult trying to research the UK part of my family from the other side of the Atlantic, most of what I have is from my ancestry account and familysearch. I am very grateful that you checked the records in Malmesbury.

Thank you again!
