CROSBIE Lookup
« on: Thursday 05 February 09 08:54 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone visiting the India Office at the British Library.

I am looking for the family of John Nelson CROSBIE who was in the West Bengal area of in India working for C&R Railways.

One daughter, Muriel Ursula Sybil (known as Sybil) was born in Roorkee in 1899 to John and Elizabeth (unknown).

I am truly stuck on this family, so if anyone can help, please contact me.

Best wishes.

Not sure if you are still looking for information still on this family, but Jane Eliza Crosbie was my gggrandmother (b1839). She had a brother John (Nelson) Crosbie born 1853 who married Elizabeth Montgomery in 1860. I have some details for 12 of their children, and some info on his parents if you are still interested.

Hi Ruth52

It's been a while since I looked at this family, but yes please, if you have information on John Nelson Crosbie, I would love to see it.  I have only found 11 children from his marriage to Elizabeth Montgomery and that he may have had a sister  called Margaret.  His parents may have been James and Albah, but that is all I have.

I am researching this family for a friend and it would be nice to be able to give her some more information.

I look forward to hearing from you.

What information do you need? I can see John Nelson & Elizabeth giving birth to quite a few children. There may be deaths there, too. (I'm looking at the British India Office Ecclesiastical Returns.) If you need anything, just let me know. Perhaps, by now, you have all the info you need (smile).

I have most of the following info gained from either LDS or FindMyPast (and of course the India Office and FIBIS)
James Crosbie was a Corporal, H Artillery
James Crosbie ( b @ 1806) married Albah Williams (b @ 1821, parents John and Anna) on 14/8/1837
4 children - Jane Eliza 19/9/1838, Ann 16/6/1844 -died same year, Margaret born (or baptised) 27/10/1845, Alice 25/11/1850, John Nelson 14/3/1853.

John Nelson married on 22/9/1873 spouse Elizabeth Montgomery (father Charles Wilson Montgomery)

John Nelson's children as follows (not in chronological order!)
John Nelson 10/8/1878 died 6/9/1879
Eileen Maud 9/12/1890
Mabel Phillipinee Ann 18/11/1876
Alfred 27/12/1881
Charles Wilson 1/12/1883
Ellen Jane 2/12/1885
Eustere/Qustice Lionel 30/10/1887 (I suspect the name is actually Eustace!)
Edward James Maurice 27/4/1901
Arthur William 27/2/1896
Stella Alice 15/6/1880
Blanche Alberta Mercy 18/8/1874
Muriel Ursula Sybil 3/1/1899
All the above dates are probably baptismal - I can't remember and didn't make it clear in my notes - my apologies

I followed this branch in detail because an Australian newspaper mentioned a CW Crosbie in connection with a relative of mine (Jane Eliza's son , Charles W de Rusett  ) As you can see Charles Wilson Crosbie is probably the same one! I also found him on 1901 census - in England staying with his sister Blanche, who had married Arthur Henry Evans and moved back to England. Of course they are all cousins to my branch!

Hope this is helpful, and thanks to the other posters, the death info fills a few gaps.

Thank you everyone for your help and Ruth52 for the information on the children.  The one I was missing was Arthur, so now I have the 12 of them.  It looks like Elizabeth Montgomery was only 14 when she started having children.   John's mother Albah was 17 when she started.

I am thinking that it is not impossible that James and Albah had more children as there are some gaps in the birthdates of the other five.

I think James Crosbie's father was also a James and possibly came from Ireland, but that is something else I have to work on.

I shall pass on this new information to my friend and thank you on her behalf.

If I come across anything useful to you, I will pass it on.

Thanks Jan, glad it was useful. I would be delighted if you found anything more about James and Albah. I've seen their marriage record, but hit the proverbial brick wall when trying to go any further back, mainly because of commonality of names.
If I find anymore about John nelson's children are you interested, or do you have everything you need now?
