Machray Family
« on: Thursday 05 February 09 07:25 GMT (UK) »
I do have some info on my family but Im having a very difficult time getting anywhere are finding anything new.  I have a Percival Augustus Lindon Machray who passed away may 17, 1800 and he is burried at Southern Cemetery.  He died at the age of 42 but I don't have is D.O.B.  He also has a daughter buried there.  Clarrisa.  He married a Mary Jane Broomhead.  I know that Percival and Mary had 8 children and I have all there names if it will help and I know some of there spouses and some of there children.  But I seem to be stuck.

Okay, obviously he can't have passed away 1800 - I can see on freebmd:

Percy Augustus L. Machray, m. possibly Mary Jane Broomhead, Sep 1881 quarter, Volume 8c page 982, Chorlton district.

Do you have this marriage certificate? That would give you his father's name and occupation.

(death is there too, in 1900).

I also see on 1881 a family in Chorlton under the name MACKRAY, which includes "Alick" (33), b. Manchester, his wife Sophia, his daughter Jane, and his brother Percy, 24, b. Manchester.

On freebmd.rootsweb.com there's a Percy Augustus Mackray, b. 1857 June quarter, Chorlton, 8c/538.

I'm having trouble finding him or his brother on the 1861 or 1871 censuses.

I think his brother might be Alexander Hutchinson Machray, married Dec 1871 in Manchester district to Sophia Hinchliff.

Interestingly, Alexander Hutchinson Machray's marriage in 1870 on LancsBMD is double-indexed under two surnames: Machray and NORRIS.

This fits with the Elizabeth Hutchinson Norris Machray who died in 1860.

IGI shows:
Elizabeth Hutchinson Norris Mackray, chrs. 11 Jun 1837, in Preston, daughter of John Hutchinson Norris Mackray and Jane.
Alexander Hutchinson Mackray, chrs. 14 Apr 1848, in Manchester, son of Jane Mackray (no father's name listed).

A Jane Mackray died in Chorlton district in 1874 aged 54 - she might be the mother of Elizabeth (and Alex and Percy?)  I think some certificates are needed to sort this out.
