Guardians/Fostering

Hi Folks

Would any one on the boards know if a child was fostered in 1931, would the guardian receive any payment for the child.

The child in question came from the Holly Mount in Tottington and was placed with a family in Durham.

Not officially - it is possible/probable that the family of the child paid the 'fostering' family in some way, but there was no official Childrens Department way back then who would pay an allowance.  I was fostered and think it was about 1949 or 50 when official payment came in the the Children's Department

If you go back to the 19th century censuses you will find the term "nurse child" is used fairly frequently.  You will also find in workhouse records cases of orphan children being placed outside the workhouse prior to the age where they could be apprenticed.

Both of these are examples of what we now call fostering and the people involved would have been paid to care for the child.  It goes back a long way and was used for the rich and the poor.

If I remember my history correctly even the Romans fostered orphans.

Might be worth contacting Salford Diocese as the child would have been Roman Catholic if your talking about Hollymount convent home. Also a lot of children passed through Nazerth house ( run by nuns) They maybe be able to help you.
