Hi Karen

Until you get some DoBs you will have trouble proving it, but I too think that the Joseph in the 4Oth is more likely to be the son of John. There is another Joseph in the LG, who seems to be starting out in his military career around 1800. He seems to be serving in Volunteer and Militia regiments rather than as a Regular. Maybe he is the one who ended up in Canada.

I would have thought that all three would have left wills.

Ken

Thanks Shaun - you have just solved a family mystery !!!  :D ;D ;D

My cousin has a very small picture with a note attached to it.  It says, Uncle Thomas Wood Thompson. Finished his education as a Dr and worked the hospitals in Dublin when his uncle Vaughan Thompson, a navy surgeon was appointed inspector of hospitals. Uncle Thomas died in England in 1833 at the age of 21.

The uncle Vaughan appears to be John Vaughan Thompson the botanist and zoolologist and now I can confirm my suspicion that Thomas Woods Thompson was the brother of my ancestor.  Thanks ! ;) :D

Also thanks Ken.  I'm working on the BMDs but as for wills I have only found one for a Joseph in Berwick who died in 1784.  He only has one son John and grandsons Joseph, James and Vaughan.  The Vaughan is the above Vaughan (I think) and Joseph is likely the one fathering Thomas Woods and my ancestor John Hall.

Hi Shaun,
Our posts just crossed.  ;)  Yes it is the correct family.  John Hall and Lavinia Hood are both connected to my ancestors.

Thanks

The Major details his service in his petition for land in Upper Canada, 1836. I hope this link works- otherwise it is found on microfilm c-6888 (Upper Canada Sundries) Library and Archives Canada, page 87756-87759
