Hello Garry. While replying to the Tow Law burial of Lee I noticed your posting.
It looks like one that I have missed!!

I can tell you that there are no MI's for your Alexander Stewart anywhere in by collection of M Inscriptions of the Dale.

Thank you very much Adam (and Jen B for practical help) for info re Lee burials at Tow Law.   One of the names you came up with was the brother of my grandmother.  However I am surprised that my gt-grandfather and his three wives are not buried at Tow Law as they lived there all their lives.  Could you tell me if Methodists were not buried in the main cemetery and if so where were they buried?  The death dates I am interested in run from c.1880 - Mary Lee - to c.1911 - James Lee - with two other wives of James probably in between.  If no headstone was erected do they still appear in your list?  Thank you - and this is a very interesting website -   Rogerina.

Hello Rogerina. All the burials for Tow Law would have been in the Municiapl cemetery or St Philips church yard.
Most of the older gravestones have been pushed over and removed to be stacked near the perimeter wall.
The ones that were broken in the act of removing them would be either removed and scrapped or if the are so heavy that they could not be moved will forever lay where they fell, usually laid face down.
The only names that are in my list are the ones that I have an inscription for.
Of course they may not have been able to afford a gravestone or it may have been a simple wooden cross and that will not have lasted.

Also of Mary Ann, wife of the above, who died April/15/1900 aged 60 years.

There are more Irvine's Marley and Lawson but they are after the 1950's cut off date that I use for posting on the subject.

You will notice that there are a few ??? that is because the gravestones are in a poor condition and some of the lead infill letters are missing or damaged.

Hello Jools. Just Google "Tow Law" and you will get lots of information.
I can tell you that it is on the A68 and in County Durham and was a mining town but the web sites will explain it  better.
I will look up the Emmerson/Emerson for you later.
