I have a piece of paper in my possession dating back to 1869.
It reads of a John Wright who died on Thursday Evening on 16th Sept 1869 written by his wife Harriet.
Would my best course of action be to try and find them on the 1851 or 1861 census?

If you know what area they lived I would say , yes., or his death certificate if you can find it

trouble is I don't know how old he was when he died. I looked at John Wrights but there were quite a few who could have been him. So I thought if I could find him on the census along with his wife I would have a better chance of finding his death cert.

I suppose you could try searching the census with a wife of the same name, hopefully you have a district otherwise it would be a tedious task

Just checked on 1861 there 32 John Wright with wife Harriet, bit of a tedious task unless you have an area.
Was the piece of paper a newspaper cutting?

No it was hand written and signed by Harriet, like perhaps she wrote the note and popped it into a family members house to let them know. I have since narrowed it down a bit but I am still not 100 percent sure I have found the right one.
