I  chanced upon this entry from a search for the Runic.  The Runic arrived in Melbourne 3 times in 1911 - in January, May and October.  Samuel Greaves did not disembark in Melbourne in that year. However, in May, an Annie Sybil Greaves did.  I would assume that a ship travelling from Albany to Melbourne ( and beyond??}, would also stop at Adelaide.  Some Australian Electoral rolls are available for searching.  This ship appears to have made very good time, as my enquiree arrived in Melbourne in the March of 1912.
It is also highly likely that the ship had stopped at Perth, before Albany. I would wonder about the attraction of Albamy, although I know it had greater significance than being just a whaling station.

A subsequent comment :  I checked births -  Samuel Cavendish Greaves born Apr - Jun 1882 in Lancashire/Cheshire appears to be enrolled in 1916 at Fremantle, Western Australia and from 1925 at Swan ( in Perth ) WA.   Further searching suggests he may not have married and died in Perth in 1950.
Added Wednesday :  returned to WA BDM  ;   for your record. there are 32 GREAVES marriages recorded in WA between 1910 and 1945.

Hello, I am searching for SS Great Britian passenger as well.  I believe William Anderson may have been a passenger in 1865, arriving in melbourne. Previously, I had thought it was 10 years earlier.  I have only recently become aware of this later year date from a last Will, stating number of years in the Colony (50 years in 1915).  If anyone has the book, 'Is Yours An S.S. Great Britain Family' could someone do a look-up for me? Searching for any additional information on William, as I cannot determine his birth in London, nor parents etc.

Much appreciated, regards

Hi Lizzie

I have the book 'Is Yours An S.S. Great Britain Family?' as my Manx family Chubbin/Cubbin arrived at Melbourne on it in 1867 on Voyage 30. Then they came on to N Z from there.

I have checked p 93 and there are only 3 Whitaker listed all on voyage 23, 1863. Mrs Hannah, 29, Walter 2 and Maria no age given. So that clears that point up for you.

I'm sure if they had travelled on this ship, family would have talked about it for the rest of their lives - as mine did as the steam voyage was history making and such a change from sailing ships.

The S.S. G.B. is now restored at Bristol, Eng. and I have been on it and aghast as to how small it was.

Only the Salons for the 1st Class had been restored and as my family had travelled out steerage class it would have been interesting to have seen how a family of seven could have been accommodated for the 59 days. I mentioned this to the receptionist as we left saying that a large number of those travelling to Aust/NZ could only have afforded the steerage passage and it would have been interesting to see how they coped, but all I got was a frosty stare! Oh dear! The class system??? I put my foot in it! :-[ :-[ :-[

My gm was an infant on the trip but her sisters, 3, 5, and 8 remember how kind the sailors were when they lifted them up to see the icebergs floating past. Warming of the earth then maybe!!

Will do Lookups in the book for anyone else - will try to remember to check this post from time to time. ::) ::) ::)

Good luck with your research - Faith Green   N Z

Here are some links to the Great Brtain and brief details of information held at Bristol Record Office.  I hope they work.

Hello everyone - what amazing stories about the SS Great Britain!
Here you are peacock1881 - this looks like your Thomas Peacock as the age fits.

Thomas Peacock- 20 years- travelled out on the SS Great Britain on Voyage 21 which left Liverpool on 20 October 1861 and took 64 days to reach Melbourne. There were 535 passengers and a crew of 141.
There is no sign of Angela Becket.

Happy hunting - Faith

Hello ulysses - I have just spotted your July query - it did not come through on our email at the time - there were gremlins in the works then!

This looks like your William Anderson - 31 years old, on Voyage 26.
This left Liverpool 17 Dec 1864 and took 62 days to reach Melbourne. It had a crew of 139 and carried 478 passengers.

This time frame appears to work in with your date. There were other Wm Andersons on other voyages.

You may have this by now anyway.
Faith

Hello  there Brett
and welcome to rootschat

The couple were married in  Victoria  in 1866
Thomas Peacock born Leigh Lancashire married Angelina BECKETT
born Essex
interestingly  the marriage is  recorded twice  reg no 3277  and reg no 3507
so were there two couples with  the same name or a problem  with  the registration of  the marriage
