Causeyend Woman House, Paisley

Anyone have any info on the location of this house, who lived there, why? and who ran it.? I have just found 2 of my grandmothers' sisters living there in the 1881 census for Paisley, Parish Paisley Abbey, aged 15 and 19. Both are occupied as bleachfield workers. There are around 60 female residents listed, ages ranging from12-72.

there were two workhouses in Paisley around time you are looking for. Are you sure is Causeyend and not Causeyside?

If Causeyside there was certainly a wrokhouse at that end oif the town.

Can you either post extract form census of give names so can have a look

Hi there,

There was also a home/refuge for girls/women in the town centre called - if Google is up to the task! - Mrs Archibald Coats Memorial Home for Girls.  This was in Weigh(h)ouse Close, Paisley, which is just off New Street in the town centre and not far from Causeyside Street. When I was a student there it was just a shell, having been badly damaged by fire - although it may have been rebuilt now since I've been away.

The local history staff at the Paisley Central Library on the High Street are very helpful.  You should be able to find them on renfrewshire.gov.uk.

Would appear that ALL of the women registered there were employed as bleachfield workers, (12 year old and 72 year old included). Does sound like it was some sort of hostel for women working in the area, perhaps related to Paisley Mills?  I can't find the record on 'Scotlands People' but on ancestry.co.uk it is called Causeyend Woman House,rather than Causeyside. Not sure how I would go about posting the record here, can I do this? I found it under Mary Ann McNeil, born 1862 in Irvine, father John McNeil, mother Helen Watters. well if it was in New St is long gone cos most of the bottom end has been demolished and redone - progress I think they'd like to call it - erm is a car park for shopping centre but I know where the Rockford mentions waas close was. remember it well growing up in the town. was my short cut back from my piano lessons


I've been through all my old Paisley books and cxannot see a pic of it or a reference. I think next step is the Paisley Ref library

Hi All, sorry this post is old but did anyone find photos or further information on the Causeyend Woman House? My 3rd great grandmother worked there in 1881, I have the original census record from ScotlandsPeople.
