Hi Jill

Just a quick question. You mention High Street West in one post and West High Street in another. I can find the chapel mentioned in one(West High Street)  but not the other.

Gary

Disregard the above. Sorry about that I got it wrong I was reading the wrong web page.

Hi Jill

Sorry about my last post, watching TV and trying to get the football scores and surfing at the same time, a sure fire recipe for mistakes. Any way I think I have found The crescent you are looking for. Its getting late here and my bed is calling for me. I will post tomorrow and leave the ball in your court.

Re the confusion over the location of the Wesleyan chapel.

KELLY's Directory for 1890 states: High Street West
KELLY's Directory for 1914 states: High West Street.

I must admit that I had assumed they were one and the same, but perhaps not?

Rev PEARSON's circuit included: 1901, High Street West, Gateshead.

Did the street name change somewhat after 1904?   Jill

Hi Jill

Just to add to the confusion there is a High West Street and a High Street very close to each other. All the records I can find are for a church on High West Street.
A photograph of bensham road church can be seen at

And High West Street at
http://isee.gateshead.gov.uk/detail.php?type=related&kv=586&t=objects
The Crescent was demolished in the 70s to make way for what is now a fly over to the tyne bridge.
I have attached a modern image with push pins to indicate where these places were.

Not sure anything more can be gained from leaving this query open.  Thanks for your help, Gary.  Cheers, Jill

If you would like any assistance with High West Street Wesleyan Methodist Chapel (to which you refer in this thread) please contact me. I am the Archivist for the Gateshead & Jarrow Methodist Circuit and this chapel, when it existed, was in part of the area covered by our Circuit collection.
