Gateshead address
« on: Monday 02 February 09 01:35 GMT (UK) »
Is there someone who could tell me whether the property at number 12 The Crescent in Gateshead still stands?

My ancestor, Rev John George PEARSON (Wesleyan Methodist) lived there in June 1902 and we are told there were 59 steps in the house - quite killing on the feet of his poor wife, Alice.

I would love to know what the house looked like.

Hi Jill

I can't find it on modern maps. I know where it is/was. I will check it out next time I pass. However there are 2 photographs at this link http://isee.gateshead.gov.uk/detail.php?t=objects&type=ext&f=&s=&record=33&name_title=vue

If it is The Crescent on Ellison Road then it is still there. Dunston Hill Methodist Church, NE11 9NS is nearby on Shrewsbury Street. The post code for 12 The Crescent is NE11 9SJ.

Thanks Gary and Stan for your contributions, but I think I am confused.

The Gateshead photos (great, by the way, and more than two) reveal The Crescent off Belle Vue Terrace, certainly in 1964.

IF The Crescent shown in pics is the correct address, which do you think would be number 12?

Stan, are you saying that you think The Crescent is somewhere else, or have the streets suffered a namechange?

However, the church shown in Belle Vue Tce is the Methodist church - not a Wesleyan chapel.

Kelly's Directory of Durham for 1890 indicates a number of Wesleyan Methodist chapels in High Street West (1860), Bensham Road, Durham Road, Mount Pleasant, Low Teams and Low Fell.

By 1914, Kelly indicates two Wes/Methodist circuits:
High West Street Circuit - High West St, Mt Pleasant, Durham Rd, Sunderland Rd and East Street, and also a Bensham Road Circuit.

I may have further info re the circuit Rev PEARSON worked at the time - will check and report back.  Meanwhile, clarification re where The Crescent was would be welcome.  Thanks, Jill

Just received info re Rev John George PEARSON - he had charge of the High Street West circuit in Gateshead from 1901, then the Bensham Road circuit from 1904 before moving on to Sunderland in 1907.  This does not mean, however, that he moved residences whilst in Gateshead.  Jill.

Hi Jill

Do the family show in the 1891/1901 census? residing at the Crescent. If they do we might be able to find the exact place via neighbouring streets.

No, Gary.  Family was still in South Shields in 1901 Census, and in Oxford in 1891.  They moved every 3 years with the church.  However, Rate books or similar would show occupants even if owned by someone else.  I have just enquired at Gateshead Council to see whether they can help.  Jill

An address search on the 1901 census only has one 12 The Crescent, in St. Edmund's, Gateshead Central Ward. The one I gave on Ellison Road  must be of a later date.
The Crescent goes from No. 1 to No. 61 which is in St. Helen's. Gateshead South Ward.

Thanks Stan.  I would imagine Rev Pearson's address would be close to his ministery at High Street West, which I think is near Ellison Road.  Know of any Local history books around for the area?  Jill
