SPARROW in Frome
« on: Sunday 01 February 09 19:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Is anybody able to find the baptism of Daniel Sparrow c1740 in Frome, Somerset?  I cant get to the RO and not found it on any online resources.

I found his marriage online in 1756 at St John Baptist church, Frome to Sarah Trolip but no details of parents given.

Secondly, can anybody locate the marriage of John Sparrow to a Matilda c1840-1845?  The children's baptisms only state Matilda, not her surname.

Many thanks in advance,

Linda

Hello Linda,

The marriage in Frome Registration District is to be found in the March Quarter of 1848. John Sparrow married Matilda Wilkins.

I cannot find the baptism of Daniel c1740, some of the Frome Parish Registers are online at http://www.gomezsmart.myzen.co.uk

There is a baptism for James Sparrow at Frome, St John, on 26 September 1733. Parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Sparrow.

Thanks Jo,

The first children were born c1844 to 1846.  Was it usual for children to be born before the parents married do you think?

I've searched the gomezsmart site but come up with nothing.

Hello Linda,

I don't think that this was that unusual, for children to be born before they married and in the country areas especially.

The Frome Museum has a databank of names to be found in the Frome area. This has been compiled from a variety of sources, newspapers included. It might be worth contacting them to see if they can find anything for Sparrow.

The link is http://www.fromemuseum.org

E-Mail: fromemuseum[at]tiscali.co.uk

Telephone: 01373 454611

I think that the museum is closed until March but you might find someone working on this type of thing and get an earlier response.

Best wishes,

Jo.

Hello again,

I have just been having another look at the Frome Family History Site, ie gomezmyzen. There are quite a number of hits for Sparrow, including Daniel Sparrow, if you put the name Sparrow into the search box for the site.

The first item has the baptisms of children by Daniel and Sarah Sparrow at St John's church, Frome. There also appears to be a burial for a Daniel Sparrow in 1765.

Worth a try if you have not done this already.

Jo.

Thanks Jo,

I'll email the museum and ask them if they have anything, never know, something interesting might come up to put some 'flesh on the bones' so to speak.

I'll check out the gomez website again, I hadnt thought to use the search facility!  I only used the set menus.

I also found the birth entry of one John and Matilda's children so i ordered the birth certificate last night to check Matilda's name - probably something I should have done a long time ago but I completely forgot about certificates after 1837 as I've been so engrossed in pre-1837 research for so long!!  I probably could've saved myself a whole load of time by doing this originally!!

Thanks for all your help.

Hi
I am aware that it is 3 years since the last post to this topic, but I too am interested in the Sparrows of Frome, Somerset. Love to share information.
