This might be a long shot, but where you say the wife was Mary, do you think it could be Marie?  She then had a son, Harry (Harold).

No the wife is definately Mary there is another mark after mary -which looks like it could be an A
So she could be mary A -but in 1891 she is mary J

I am working from the image -which is very badly written in parts -but Mary is very clear

I have found the medal card of harold Stringer Royal Field Artillery
Regt no 1779, 740999

but can't find any pension records

I can't find any 1901 birth reg for harold Springer which would be on 1901 census

have you looked for him in 1911??

I have Mary JANE Varney she was born Tipner Porstmouth,her sister Matilda was my Great Grandmother.

I have not looked for Harold Stringer in 1911 yet. 

Again, just thoughts, but I am guessing that if he was born in 1901, then he would have been a young boy on entering the war at 16 or 17.  The mortality rate of soldiers during this time was very high, and the opportunity for promotion was always there.  As Harold was a Driver (Private), then I am assuming he joined the war towards  it's closing date, during to him not ranking up.

If Harold was born after 1901, then he would have been too young to join the war, although he could have lied over his age, as many boys did at this time.

I have not found anything on Marie Sturm from Plymouth, but she might not have been born in Britain, guessing by her name.

I thought it would be fairly straight forward to get some info on the soldier, but it just opens door after door as you dig deeper. 

Thanks for helping out so far, and I don't envy your task trying to find all those children.
