Rae Mitchel Milne
« on: Sunday 01 February 09 12:42 GMT (UK) »
I have just received information from a cousin that has details of her family tree that links to mine. In it she has William Rae (2/8/1807-8/7/1892) and Christiana Mitchell. Christiana's parents were Sylvester Mitchell and Barbara Barrack.

She add that :

William's parents were Alexander Rae (17/11/1737-1833) and Agnes Milne

I am sure if this correct as it implies that his son William was born when he was 70 years old.

Does anyone else have these people in their tree or further details for me please.

Many thanks
Donovan

Hi Donovan

Most of this I suspect can be checked out at Scotland's People  (http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk) but to help would need to have an idea where these folks were from.

Is this the William?  Born 02/08/1807 RAE WILLIAM Parents ALEXANDER RAE/AGNES MILNE M Skene  /ABERDEEN

Cheers

Thank you for you replies. You have the right people. I have the details for William but it is the birth date for his father Alexander that concerns me. I was given 1737 and I sure that this is incorrect. It would make more sense if it were 1787 or even 1757.

Hi Donovan

I agree I think his birth year is wrong.

Am assuming he was born in Sklene.

There are therefore 2 possibles :

Born 09/02/1777 RAE ALEXANDER WILLIAM RAE/ELSPET TAYLOR M Skene  /ABERDEEN 238/ 0010 0173

OR

Born  12/04/1778 RAE ALEXANDER WILLIAM RAE/JEAN SPENCER M Skene  /ABERDEEN 238/ 0010 0177

Agnes died in 1870 aged 89 (She was a widow)

Is shame Alexander died pre 1855 or we'd have a death cert to prove. Ah well

Thanks Ann
I am now going to ask my cousin if any of the wives names perhaps appear on the hand written tree that she has. Hopefully it will confirm one of these. I am most grateful for your help.

Regards
Donovan

Hi Donovan

Wee bit more that I think helps. These are William's siblings :

born 19/03/1815 RAE ELSPET ALEXANDER RAE/AGNES MILNE Skene  /ABERDEEN 238/ 0010 0255 VIEW

Born  14/03/1819 RAE ISOBEL ALEXANDER RAE/AGNES MILNE U Skene  /ABERDEEN 238/ 0010 0266

Born 09/02/1806 RAE MAY ALEXANDER RAE/AGNES MILNE F Skene  /ABERDEEN 238/ 0010 0233

Born 02/08/1807 RAE WILLIAM ALEXANDER RAE/AGNES MILNE M Skene  /ABERDEEN 238/ 0010 0237 VIEW

Born 07/05/1809 RAE WILLIAM ALEXANDER RAE/AGNES MILNE FR260 M Skene  /ABERDEEN 238/ 0010 0241

Going with naming conventions I'd say fact they have a daughter Elspet then the first birth for Alexander is the one.

Hope this helps

Sorry forgot to say naming convention not 100% foolproof but usually a good guide.

first son - named after paternal grandfather
first daughter named after maternal grandmother
second son maternal grandfather
second daughter paternal grandmother
etc

Hi Ann
Getting a bit confused but I think what we then saying is:

WILLIAM RAE and ELSPET TAYLOR had a son Alexander Rae born 09/02/1777.

He married Agnes Milne.

They had WILLIAM ALEXANDER 02/08/1807

This would then make sense as the date written by hand would imply that the 3 was in fact a 7 = 1777 and not 1737.

Your a star - and I got other family members as well.

Thank very much

Donovan
