Help with Irish BMD civil registrations (SHEPPARD from KINSALE)
« on: Sunday 01 February 09 12:33 GMT (UK) »
Ok, I might be being an idiot, so forgive me if I've missed it, but...

Once you have an index reference (in my case the lady in question is Eiza Rosina Sheppard, born Kinsale (Cork?) in the 3rd quarter of 1884), how do you get further than this? Is it the same as English records where you can go to a sort of reister office website and order a copy? Where would I go to for the Irish GRO?

Thanks! :-)

PS: My full ref (found on familysearch thingy) is:
Name: Eliza Rosina Sheppard
Registration district: Kinsale
Record type: BIRTHS
Registration date - quarter and year: Jul - Sep 1884
Estimated birth year:
Age:
Mother surnames:
Film number: 101060
Volume: 5
Page: 322
Digital GS number: 4193461
Image number: 00259
Collection: Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes 1845-1958

This topic split from Tips for searching Irish BMD civil registration in Irish Resources.

To order certificates see GRO website:

If you have the reg district, quarter, vol and pasge number a photocopy cert only costs 4 euro instead of the usual 6 euro.

Thanks Dara, and ... I'm sorry if I am continuing to be dim, but, where can I order these certs from? I'm assuming that Ireland has a version of the GRO? All I found was a Word document to download for ordering stuff on but it seemed t be a bit more expensive than that. I think I might have gone to the wrong site - not least because I would have thought they would have an online service rather than having to print out a form? Sorry to be a pain!

The link I gave you is for the General Register Office and the details of how to order certificates are there. As Dara explained you already have the details you need to order a certificate.

To clarify: if you are able to go into the research room in Dublin, you can get a photocopy cert for €4.
If you are ordering by post or fax to the HQ GRO in Roscommon, you pay €6 for a photocopy posted out to you.  You only require the full €10 cert if it's for a living person to prove legal or social welfare issues.
There is a backlog of about 3 weeks at the moment in Roscommon because the LDS site is so good!

Vicky

I also found ordering Irish certificates rather bewildering. I had already ordered English certs via GRO quite easily and also Scottish records from Scotland's People. I assumed there would be a safe/secure method of ordering and paying for certificates by post for those of us who are unable to visit in person.

I don't have an Irish bank account and they don't want cheques in £sterling. Sending credit card details by post is not a secure method of payment. Someone on rootschat said she sends a 10euro note with her form to cover the cost of a photocopy and postage, which seems to work for her. As a photocopy posted out costs 6 euros this means we are allowing 4 euros for postage. 10euros seems quite expensive to me for a photocopy which can be obtained for 4euros if visiting the GRO in person.

Having said this, as it's the only way I am able to obtain certificates, I sent my 10euros 2 weeks ago. According to Purpellers post I probably have another week to wait for my certificate!

I think the difficulty of paying for certificates will put many people off sending for them. Perhaps it's time the GRO updated their system so we can send for certificates online using a fair and secure method of payment.
