Hello Stuart,
I have only just come across your message about boatmen in Tipton.

I have a family connection namely James Dutfield, who was born in Tipton in 1845. His
father was Thomas Dutfield. Both were boatmen.  Do you have any information
regarding the Dutfield family line in Tipton ?

regards

Hi All,

My GGFather William TOLLEY b1862 and his half brother Mark Tolley b1873 were both from the Toll End area and are both listed as boat labourers in the 1891 census, can anyone enlighten me as to what a boat labourer did?  Also if anyone has any information on either of them I would be most greatful.

I realise this is an old thread but I only joined today.
Steve

Hi Stuart

I am working on the Wright family at present and having the same problems as you.  Elizabeth Wright was my 2xggrandmother and have only just discovered that her father was Thomas WRIGHT, a boatman.  I have her marriage certificate to Thomas BATE, also a boatman.  I found that Elizabeth was ch on 21 Mar 1829 Lower Mitton, Worcester, and her sister Sarah was ch on 7 Jun 1827 also the same place.  Parents were Thomas Wright and Sarah.  Like you, I couldn't go any further, unable to find them on any Census until 1871 (where I found Elizabeth).  I found this family on another site:

Thomas Wright b 1800 Nottinghamshire and also Birmingham
Sarah DEELEY born 1800 Birmingham
Siblings:
John b.21 Jun 1821 ch 28 Sep 1821 Birmingham (I found this source)
Benjamin b1825 Stourport (unable to find)
William b1825 Stourport (unable to find)
Sarah ch 7 Jun 1827 Stourport (found this)
Elizabeth ch21 Mar 1829 Stourport (found this)
Samuel b1834 Stourport (unable to find)

I noted someone else querying the Tonks family - Thomas Bate's daughter, Sarah Ann, married John Tunks, also a boatman (my ggrandparents).

Laurette

Hi Polly

No match unfortunately.  My John Tunks/Tonks was born 1843 in Gloucester.  Married Caroline Tustin and after she died married Sarah Ann Glover nee Bate.

Cheers

Laurette
