Lost at sea
« on: Saturday 31 January 09 17:11 GMT (UK) »
Is there a resource that lists lost seamen for Scotland? I think there's one for England...

Cheers,

Hi  China

Deaths at Sea  will come under 'Minor Records' in the County selection  on SP. As far as I recall, some are also in the 'Deaths at Sea' on Find My Past.

Have you a name/date?

Hi Gadget,

John Paterson (may be Patterson) somewhere between 1851 and 1861...he's a seaman in 1851 and his wife is head of the household in 1861, with 5 kids......

He's not comin gup on either set of records  :(

SP's only start in 1855 and FindMyPast in 1854. I think also , if he was lost rather than definitely dead,  then a death cert wouldn't be issued immediately.

Have you got anything like births of children after 1851 to narrow down the timescale?

Elisabeth Paterson is 4 at the 1861, so she'd have been born about 1857...

so 1856 onwards - I'll take a wider look, in case it was one of those with a time lag. What was his DoB?

Who registered the birth?

Where did they live?

Hi sancti, thanks for your interest.

I have no idea who registered the birth. Is it important?

The family lived at 11 Georges Place Joint Stock Buildings, Dundee, in 1851, according to the Ancestry transcript.
