Hi

I'm hoping some of you may recognize this place / surname.

I've been doing a one-name study of the surname Lickfold for the last 30 years.  The name originates from the hamlet of Lickfold, which is in the parish of Lodsworth, which is near Petworth and Midhurst.

Most of the family events in that area up to the late 1800s took place at Lurgashall.  Over the years various Lickfolds migrated away - mainly into west Surrey and (of course) London.

I'm hoping that some listers may have links with this illustrious name.

Hi Gordon,
Welcome to Rootschat, and particularly the Sussex page.  Nice to have another West Sussexer on board.  My early research is around the Horsham area and like your clan they drifted into West Surrey, Dorking & that area.

Hi Gordon,

I've been researching the name HOWICK in Sussex, and came across this little snippet of information, that in 1297 there was an exchange of land between Walter de Lickfold and Atte Hoewyck.  There is a place called Howick Farm not far from Lickfold, and I believe it was here that my ancestors' name originated.

Your 1297 reference sounds very interesting.  Can you advise me where you found it please. 

You are right that Howick farm is still there - on the lane from Lickfold to Fernhurst.  It seems a reasonable supposition that the Hoewyck family (as I believe it was spelt in those times) probably hail from that location.
