Smallpox Hospital in Gateshead c1871

I've just received an ancestor's death certificate from 1871 that states his place of death as "Smallpox Hospital, Gateshead".  Can anyone tell me where that would have been located?  He was living in Low Fell at the time of the 1871 census. 

Also, would he have been able to have a civil burial or would his body have been disposed of via the hospital?

I think grainger is right.  You can see a map showing Gatshead in 1865 and in 1894 if you go to  http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm   and the hospital is there in the latter but not in the former.  Your descendant must have been one of the early patients there.

That's excellent, it's pretty much the site of the current Queen Elizabeth Hospital where I worked for a while.  Will try to find out when it opened.

The mapping website is brilliant, Paul.  Definitely one for the favourites.

Have you tried the Durham County Council Birth Marriage and Death search site?  Its one of the few that gives you the exact partner match for marriages.
