Hi Laura

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

I looked at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountySurrey.htm#G the Hugh Wallis site and found the following

Richard Roffey baptised 28 August 1785 at Godstone to Richard and Jane Roffey.

I have Roffeys in my tree too from Horley and Burstow, don't know if they are connected at all.  I shall drag out my notes tomorrow and have a look.

Hi Laura

For pre civil registration ie 1837 internet options are somewhat limited and yes it is best to visit local archives.  Are you near to Surrey?  There is an excellent History Centre at Woking which covers the whole of Surrey.

In the past I have also visited Lingfield Research Centre http://www.eastsurreyfhs.org.uk/lingfieldcentre.htm which is part of the East Surrey Family History Society.

I'm from Southampton so not far to travel. Will have to get my head round it all first. It gets so confusing! Thanks for your help.

Also having a real problem finding a George Roffey 1816 son of Richard 1786 and Hannah Roffey cant seem to find him in 1831-1841. He was born in Bermondsey.

Hi Laura

Do you have any more details about this George at all?  In the 1841 census there is a George Roffy in Bermondsey born 1821 but his age would have been rounded up in that census.  He was married to an Eliza.  H0107 1048 5 21 5
