Crockfords Clerical Directory first published in 1858 lists all Clergy and their c.v. www.crockford.org.uk and has a historical data base. I don't know if it will include lay preachers. It may be some help. Remember that what is now The Church in Wales was Church of England before 1923.
If it was South Wales he was more likely to be a nonconformist perhaps a Methodist or a Baptist.

Hi onecoat  :)

I had a great grandfather who was a lay preacher in North Wales around about the same time. He was also a miner and a Henry Roberts  :)

Luckily, I have a diary of his, family knowledge and an obituary which led me to his Methodism. If you can find his date of death and find an obituary in the local papers, you might be able to work out what denomination he was.

This link is good for Methodist records and you could e-mail them:
