Parish Church lookup - Clun
« on: Thursday 29 January 09 04:22 GMT (UK) »
Morning from a very hot Australian - over 40 again 3rd day in a row!!,  ;D

My grt grandparents - William Holloway and Ann Breese - were married on the 29th jan 1866 in the Parish Church in Clun, Salop and noted as full age, which I believe is 21 or above. The service was taken by a Congreve Selwyn by the looks of it.

Would the parish records hold an actual age for either William or Ann ?

The certificate states "married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Estalished Church, by --------------- or after Banned by xxx Congreve Selwyn"

Can anyone explain what the term "Banned" means ?

many thanks

Jayne   ;D

Banned is a misread it should be Banns which have to be called for three sundays in the Parishes of the future bride and groom to enable comment. A license gets round this procedure.

The registers are probably filmed and held on microfiche, copies are usually available from the local archives or Family History Society.

The age as you state is given if below 21 even then it sometimes just says Minor.

What years are you talking about the census records may help or what about parish register searches.

Hi Oly,

Many thanks for you reply, I am still on such a steep learning curve.
The census records between 1841 - 1891 have given me a rough idea - birth around 1839/40.

I think I need to join the local herefordshire family society to source more information.

Cheers

Jayne

I wouldnt confine it to just Herefordshire.
Clun in right on the border of Hereford, Shropshire (aka Salop) and Wales, and the borders around it can be very 'fluid' !
Clun would mainly be classed as being in Shropshire (salop) rather than Herefordshire tho I would think.

I lived close by Clun (between Clungunford & Bedstone) ............ I had a Shropshire Postcode and tel number .............. closest shops & Library came under Wales ................. my Dr & Dentist were both less than a mile away & in Hereford - but the nearest hosptal was in Shropshire!

LOL and I soon learnt to read diversion signs in English & welsh - we used to joke when they ran out of English they used welsh to confuse people!
