Orphanage
« on: Wednesday 28 January 09 15:46 GMT (UK) »
My late father was placed in an orphange about 1913 when his mother was placed in Stanley Royds in Wakefield. There are no living relatives to ask the name of the orphanage. It may have been in wakefield, Bradford, Leeds or some place else. How can I find the names of orphanages in Wes Yorkshire?

Catherine, you could try contacting these people first.  They will at least be able to advise you as to whether any records are still available.  Orphanages in the 1900's were not as we know them today.

how did you know they were in stanley royd?
I'm curious as i have a family member who was in institution 1911, and i believe her to have been in stanley Royd, and had a child in 1912, who died 10 months after she, who i can ppresume died in childbirth - although the child was buried with another family emember and her mother which points to me that the lady buried with them took care of the child for 10months.

I was able to obtain all my grandmother's records by providing documentaion that she was indeed my grandmother. She was admitted on April 14, 1913. It was then known as a Pauper Lunatic Asylum I believe. It cost me a small fee.

Thank you, Dee! They responded quickly and found out my Dad was placed in Headingley Orphan Home in Leeds! I think it helped that I told them he and his family were all members of the Society of Friends and I think this orphanage was run by them. They gave me an e-mail contact so I can find out if I can retrieve his records.

I would dearly love to have a photograph of this building if it still exists. Does anyone have an idea where I could search online? I tried a google search but was not successful.

Catherine, I'm so pleased you were able to obtain the info. I'm not sure where to look for photos.  Have been 'googling' but you could try Leeds Library.  They have a wealth of photos from the past.  It's worth a try.

Thanks for the tip. I tried Leeds library but they have nothing. I'm the eternal optimist and someday I'll find a photo!
