Pepper Hall - Clifton Manchester

Further to my earlier comment on the Pendlebury Train Station thread. I think the hall I asked about was called Pepper Hall - other than this I can't seem to find any further information. There's plenty about Clifton Hall and Agecroft Hall but Pepper Hall seems to have disappeared from history

Hi,
I don't know this area at all, but I have found "Pepper Hill" on a 1939 Map of Manchester, Salford and surrounding district. Its to the east of Clifton Junction, just north of where Lumns Lane meets up with Rake Lane.

You do get a few hits if you google "Pepper Hill" with "Rake Lane"

Their map guide gives lots of place names in that area, including (quote from the site)
"Acme Mill, Albion Mill, Albion Foundry, Hope Mill, Cyclone Works, St Peter's church, Swinton Schools (at foot of map), Albert Mill. The eastern half of the map, east of Bolton Road, includes Newtown Colliery with tramway, the disused Botany Bay collieries (at top of map), Pepper Hill, Pendlebury Colliery with tramway, Clifton Hall Colliery, Clifton Junction station"

There was a signal cabin called "Pepper Hill Box" on the railway about a half mile (or less) north-west of Clifton Junction station. It was in a cutting on the west side of the track.

I passed it every morning in the 1950s on the train from Bolton, and assumed Pepper Hill was the high ground on the west side of the cutting i.e. north of Pendlebury and just east of Clifton itself.

If there was a "Pepper Hall" thereabouts it will probably show up on the earliest (1840s) Ordnance Survey map.

Have had a look on the earliest Ordnance Survey (1840s) and can see no "Pepper Hall".

A "Pepper Hill Bridge" is marked though - the first bridge over the railway just north-west of Clifton Junction - it's near where the signalbox was that I remember.

I've got to the bottom of this - It wasn't Pepper Hall it was Clively Bank House. It's on the 1907 ordnance map. The old boundary wall to the south is still there and forms the boundary of what is now Copeland Avenue. I grew up on Copeland (6) and looking at the map it's obvious that the council used the old driveway layout of the house to form the layout of the street. I can remember when  they used to resurface the road it was stripped back to cobbles before they lay tarmac - given that the council housing was 'modern' there wouldn't have been cobbled street so I assume the old house had a cobbled drive. The footpaths to the south and east are clearly visible on the map and these are the rights of way that remain - although they are now so overgrown they are not accessable. Pepper Hill is to the north and this is where I got confused as to the name. The bridge over the railway at Clifton Junction is called Pepper Hill Bridge. Thanks to Walli from another thread that uncovered the answer!
