1871 Census Request Surrey King
« on: Wednesday 21 April 04 00:11 BST (UK) »
I am seeking any information about Frances King, b. 1816, Carey, Ireland. In the 1881 Census she is listed as residing at 188 Abbey Road, Bermondsey, Surrey along with her two grand daughters, Sarah Ann King, b. 1864 St. Olave, Bermondsey, Surrey and Mary Ann King, b. 1865, Bermondsey.

Can anyone tell me if Frances is listed at this address in 1871? If so, who are the other household members?

Any other information about Frances, Sarah Ann or Mary Ann would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to tie them to my great great grandmother, Mary Ann King Cooper.

Hi there Altaria

Just spotted this on the 1871 census - matches quite a bit of your criteria - maybe worth a second glance

Thank you for the help. I'm not really certain if it's the King connection I am looking for. All I have been told about my GGGrandmother is her name, Mary Ann King, her descent, Irish, her husband's name, William Frederick Cooper, that she had at least one sister and an unknown number of brothers who had a business in Hastings, that she worked as a pastry cook at Hatfield House, that once married she had several children including my GGrandmother Alice Amelia Cooper (b.1877 Bermondsey) and that she was deceased while Alice was still a child.

Trying to connect these Kings was a shot in the dark.

But thanks for looking it up for me.

Thanks Chris.

I'm afraid all info I have for the Kings in Hastings is sketchy. Family "history" says Mary Ann King was an Irish girl who had two brothers who farmed and/or had a business in Hastings, possibly a green grocers. No names, no dates.

Mary Ann was supposed to have been a pastry cook at Hatfield House and "married Frederick Cooper from there" which I take to mean she was working when she met him and left the job when they married(?)

Her sister, name unknown, was supposed to be a wet nurse, possibly also at Hatfield House.

We know Mary Ann had more than one child. We know she died when her daughter Alice was young and Alice was raised by her older sister(s) We know Alice went into service as a housemaid when she was quite young.

But the only confirmed facts I have about Mary Ann and Frederick Cooper are that their daughter Alice Amelia was born in 1877 in St. Olave Bermondsey, and that Frederick was listed as deceased on Alice's marriage license in December 1899.

Thanks again for your help.

Now have more information re: William and Mary Ann. William Frederick "Harbour" Cooper was born in Lewes,Sussex 1846. Mary Ann King was born in Lewes 1841. They had five children, Annie b. 1872, George b. 1874, Rose b. 1876, Alice Amelia b. 1877 and Arthur b. 1879. The children were all born in Bermondsey. The family resided at 51 Willow Walk, Bermondsey from at least 1877 to 1881 when the census was taken. Their last name was listed as Harbour instead of Cooper on the census for some unknown reason. Family history says William liked the name Harbour and added it to Cooper.  Alice's birth certificate and marriage license both list his name as William Frederick Cooper.

Would someone be so kind as to look William up in 1871 as HARBOUR, possibly at the same address? I would appreciate any leads.
