Jewish/Catholic marriage - help please!
« on: Wednesday 28 January 09 11:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have Ellen Bailey (or Nell/Helen/Ellie) b.1899 co.Tipperary Ireland, marrying one Harold/Henry Levi Bromet, (b.1879 in London). She is Roman Catholic, he is a British army officer, of Jewish family.

Family stories indicate they maybe married when Ellen was in her 40's, after she had worked in the Bromet household for a number of years.

I have no definite year of marriage, or parish... my question is, is it possible to search any kind of online index for the marriage? I've tried freebmd, to no avail; are there other search sites, please?

From previous help by kind rootschatters, I know that Harold/Henry was living in Hampton Court Road, Hampton, in the 1950's,working as an advertising agent.

It seems the couple ended up living in Ireland in the 1960's.
Any help much appreciated, to point me in the right direction to track down the marriage...
Cheers,
Mags.

If she married in her 40s (ie 1940s) then there are no searchable indexes available.

You could trawl through the index for each quarter year manually. Ancestry have them on line but as you don't know when they married it will be a long job.

Dear Mags,

this is a real long shot but if [a BIG if] your Ellen got married in a Catholic church then the priest should have sent notification to the church where she was baptised so that her baptism entry could be endorsed. If you know in which church she was baptised then it might be worth contacting them to see if it was done. If it was done - then it should give details of the date and place of the marriage.

I don't think that they would have been allowed to get married in a RC church at the time unless he converted.  Are there any family stories to that effect?

As I understand it he wouldn't have had to convert to Catholicism - but he would probably have had to undertake to bring up the children as Catholics - but as I wrote before it is a long shot.

I could only see 3 Bromet marriages between 1940 and 1950 (inclusive).
The one you want is between  Harold L. Bromet and Nellie C. Bailey in 1949 (3) in Surrey N.   5g 992.
Just as a matter of interest one of the other marriages was between a Henry/Harold Bromet and an Alice Crisp in 1940(1) in Marylebone   1a 1719.

Dear Rog, JDS and Shropshire Lass,
Many thanks for all your suggestions. There were no children born of this marriage; I will ask a cousin in Ireland who is also related to Ellen Bailey, whether her family had ever heard of a conversion to Catholicism - certainly they went back to rural Ireland to live in their later years. And good idea to check with the bride's original parish in any case, so thanks for that too.

Amber - thank you so much! I am absolutely thrilled with this, you are a real gem.
With the ref you quote, does that mean I can order the cert from the GRO now? (Sorry, I'm  not up to speed with the English side of family history yet, all my research has been in Ireland so far (my parents are Irish, but I was born in Oxford when they'd emigrated here in 1960).
Interesting that there was also a marriage in 1940 - I have an address for H.L.Bromet from the 1935 phone book (from previous help by the most excellent rootschatters!), which is Ember Farm Way, East Molesley; also there in 1939; in 1953, he's at Garrick Villas, Hampton Court Rd, Hampton. And the same in 1958.

I must check a map to see how far apart these addresses are from each other. Harold also had a business address in London.

Amber, can I be so forward as to ask where you got your info from, please?
Thanks a million for taking the time to look it up for me, it's made my day.
I'm so happy!

Mags

I am so glad to be of some help, its lovely to make someones day !!
All the necessary information for sending for the marriage certificate is given in the email. I suggest that if you are going to send for the certificate that you do it soon , as on Monday a new TV series of  "Who do you think you are" starts and the Registration Office will then be very busy. This is from past experience and you have to wait for ever for a certificate.
I got my information from Ancestry. co on their BMC section.
