while doing my own family reserach i came across mathew tyas who at the time of the 1881 census
he was on board the ss west riding in newport monmouth wales.
is there any where i can find out more about his job and the ship/boat?

Going by the name of the ship and the fact that the Master and several of the crew are from Yorkshire, the steam ship West Riding may have been registered at Hull - you could try contacting the Maritime Museum at Hull.
