1871 Census Request Surrey Cooper
« on: Tuesday 20 April 04 23:56 BST (UK) »
Seeking any information available about my Great great grandparents, Frederick William Cooper and Mary Ann King.  They are the parents of Alice Amelia Cooper, born 5 Nov. 1877, at 51 Willow Walk, Bermondsey.  The birth was registered in St. Olave, Southwark.

I believe the couple had two sons, and two additional daughters, one named Rose. I believe Alice Amelia to be the youngest child.

Frederick was a tanner. Mary Ann may have been a cook/or domestic servant at Hatfield House, Herts.

I know Frederick was deceased before 1 Jan 1899.
I believe Mary Ann may have died before 1891.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm afraid I can't be of much help. We know Mary Ann and Frederick/William were married in 1877 when they had my GGrandmother Alice Amelia.

I was told Alice was the youngest of the family. I was also told Mary Ann died when Alice was quite young so she was raised by an older sister(s).

If Alice was indeed the youngest child of several, I am guessing that Mary Ann would have been between 25 and 30 when she had Alice, putting her birthdate at around 1844. But I have no dates or locations and only assumptions.

Thanks for your help in any case.

I had a look at the 1881 Census for 51 Willow Walk, Bermonsey and it appears that your COOPER's have been transcribed wrongly either by the enumerator or the person who transcribed the entry as HARBOUR for some reason or the other but I would say from the names and occupation of the father 'TANNER' and Alice aged 3 and another Rose aged 5 also wife Mr must be mary that they are your family I suggest you look at the original.

Roma you are a miracle worker!!!!! It has been said to me repeatedly by my Mum and my aunts that my GGGrandad was known as "Harbour Cooper" but no one knew why, or exactly how it connected with him. There was no mention of the Harbour name on my GGrandmother's birth or marriage certificate, so we just assumed Harbour was a nickname William used.

But to actually see it in print, on something official is like unearthing a priceless relic! This has to be my family...and now I know Alice Amelia's siblings' names...my Mum always said she remembered an Auntie Rose.

This gives me a great new place to start looking. I can't tell you how pleased and excited I am that you went the extra mile and found this information for me.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!!!

the sussex 1871 census is not on ancestry yet and doesn't look like it will be for at least a few months, but someone out there may have it. There does not appear to a william harbour in other counties in england so probably still in sussex.

not sure if you already have the 1871 census for mary ann but found this that could be her.

Thanks Tara!

I know Mary Ann was a servant of some kind, supposedly a pastry cook at Hatfield House according to family lore. This says ladies maid, but that doesn't mean it wasn't her.

Do you know if Hatfield House is in Hitchin?

Also the birthplace listed, Fletching...on the 1881 Census Mary Ann's is listed as Lewes, Sussex. Is that near Fletching?

Can see it is time to find my trusty atlas, although it does seem that many district names, etc., in the UK changed in the early 1900's so it gets confusing.
