Fay

Mick Mellon on that photo may be your relation then, he would be about the right age.  My gt granda was 24 on the photo.  I will quiz my grandmother when I see her again to see if she remembers him.

Hi, everyone just found his thread.  My direct ancestors are Mallons and moved from Irleand to Gateshead in, I think the 1870s.  My GGrandfather john  Mallon and his brother Terence worked in the Alkali works which were on the banks of the Tyne at that time, and would have gone down the river towards bill quay. I think a lot of the Irish population worked there.  Interestingly the Irish catholics settled on the Gateshead side of the Tyne and the protestants were in Newcastle!

I still live in the area and I'm pretty sure Gateshead Library has electoral rolls for bill Quay  I'll try to remember to look next time I go.

My family tell me that my Mallons came from tyrone but I haven't found them there yet!

Good Evening Seansdad

My GGG Grandfather Patrick Mellon/Mallon etc came over from Ireland, Maghera
c 1860 and settled in Bill Quay.

He and his wife had several children - one of them was named John.

From my research it seems family names were passed down through the generations so you never know we may be related.

Do you have any information on your ancestors re linage etc.

Regards
Fay

Hi Fay, not really sure what I am doing and if this information has any bearing to what you have asked but here goes, My name is Patricia Munro nee Mellon, my Great Grandfather was Patrick Mellon born in Co Derry approximately 1854, he married Isabella Convery who was born in Heworth Co Durham1862. They had James 1885, Jane 1887 John 1889 Sarah 1892 Cornelius 1896 (my Grandfather) and Bella 1900 (not sure about that date). I know they lived in the Bottle houses Bill Quay, but they had moved to South shields by 1899 as John was born in South Shields as was my Grandfather.
I have Isobella's father as John Convery 1821 and her Mother Ann (no maiden name) 1819 and other children Margaret 1864, James 1855, Martha 1854 Mary 1850. The name Bridget Convery rings a bell but not sure where it fits. Unfortunately all my relatives who could help have all passed away and I am only a novice at this ancestry research.  Any way maybe some of this fits in my Grandfather Cornelius married Gertrude Alicia Young they only had 1 child Frederick Cornelius, but he had 5 of us lol.     Just remembered on the 1911 Census Patrick was 57 and a widower and on the 1891 census his brother James was living with him aged 40.  Just found this web site so hope I am doing it right.   Regards Patricia

Hi Patricia

My Mellon/Convery ancestors could be related to yours but I haven't come across the names you mentioned in my family tree during my research - in fact i've only researched a direct line going back from my Grandfather David Mellon.

Would love to research more when I get time  - if I come across anything to link our families will let you know.

Regards

Fay

Thanks for that Faye, I am heading over to the UK next year so will try and follow up my Mellon and Convery family, might be a bit easier I still have family living in Bill Quay and Pelaw. Would be interesting to find out if David Mellon has any connection with Patrick Mellon.  Regards Patricia
