Felling/Gateshead Electoral Rolls
« on: Tuesday 27 January 09 21:57 GMT (UK) »
I hope someone will help me out here - not sure I have posted this in the correct section.

I live in Birmingham and am researching my grandfather (who came to Birmingham from Felling) around the very early 1920's.

I have traced his family back through census records from 1861 until 1901 living in Bill Quay.

Does anyone know if there are any Electoral Record web sites available for that area on line.

I am unsure how I can progress any further and these records would obviously help.

I subscribe to a site called Midland Historical Data that have transcribed Electoral Records in the Birmingham area from 1912 through to 1939 which has proved invaluable for tracing my Birmingham ancestors -  so am looking for something similar to assist me with my Grandfathers family.

Hi Fay

Sorry a bit late on this post.  I don't know of any electoral record sites for Bill Quay, but I would be very interested in them if you find any.

Out of curiosity, what are your relatives names?  A large part of my family lived in and around Bill Quay and as Bill Quay is such a small place a lot of the family names still exist in the area.

Hopefully you find what you're looking for.

Hi Helen and Dione

Unfortunately I still haven't been able to find any Electoral Rolls for Bill Quay - will keep searching and if I do come accross anything will let you both know.

Helen,

My ancestors names were Mellon(Mellan) (and other variations) and Convery.

They came over from Ireland c 1860 and settled in Bill Quay.

Regards

Fay

Hi Fay

I haven't heard the name Mellon, but my ancestors are also Convery's!  From my research there were 2 large Convery families which I suspect are related but haven't found a connection.  What are the names of your Convery's?

Hi Helen

What a coincidence.

I do not have much - in fact  - very little information regarding my Convery ancestors as I  started with the Mellon(Mellan) side.

My G G Grandmother - Bridget Convery married Patrick Mellon(Mallon) at Lavey RC Church, Maghera, Ireland c late 1850's. They moved to Bill Quay c1860.

I think some of Bridgets relatives also came over from Ireland and lived in Bill Quay (as I have come accross them living with the Mellon family on census returns) but to be honest I have not pursued that line - yet.  That is on my "to do" list.

I would be very interested if you think there is a connection with your line - or if you have any information on my ancestors.

Regards

Fay

Hi Fay

My Convery's also come from Maghera.  My line is from Charles Convery born c1829 who married Rosanna McCann in Felling in 1854.  His parents were John Convery and Mary McCullough.

Searching the 1881 census for Bill Quay, there are 2 large Convery families and the Mellon family living in the same place - Bottle Houses.  One Convery family is mine, I have always wondered whether the other was related, but haven't done much research to find this out yet.

Hi Helen

I haven't been able to find out the parents of Bridget Convery.  She was born c1840 according to census information and her death certificate.

I haven't really known where to start to assertain her parentage.

Any ideas?

Once I take up my research on that branch of the family, then if I come accross anything will PM you.

In the meantime I will have another look at the census records that I have on file.

Best wishes

Fay

Hi Fay

Probably the easiest way to find out Bridget's parents is to obtain her marriage certificate.  There is someone on here that has put the information of Charles' parents on for someone so I will post a message to him to see if he can trace Bridget's parents too.

I am looking at the information I have for Charles so will let you know if I find anything that could help.
