Elizabeth Cawood c1783
« on: Tuesday 27 January 09 18:37 GMT (UK) »
Elizabeth c1783 was a single mother and lived on Whixley Grange farm with sister Sarah (census 1841).
I am stuck at this point. I think her father may be Richard and her grandparents Richard and Sarah. Is there anyone out there that can help verify this.

Going round to the back door another Richard and Catherine took over the farm after their deaths and I have been able to establish this Richard is a  second cousin.
I am inundated with Richards ???

Afraid I can't help with parents of Sarah and Elizabeth but did find some references to Elizabeth and Sarah Cawood in Leeds Mercury (apologies if you have this information already).

There appears to have been a legal case (Cawood v Thompson) about a bequest made by the sisters of 4,000 pounds for a Sunday school for boys and girls in the parish of Whixley.  It also confirms the dates of death -
Elizabeth Cawood - 20 August 1847
Sarah Cawood - 3 March 1848

There is then a Marriage announcement in the Leeds Mercury of 14 July 1849 for the 2nd cousin, Richard:

On Wednesday week, at Whixley Church by the Rev H Armstrong MA Vicar, RICHARD CAWOOD Esq of Whixley Grange to CATHERINE, second daughter of Mr ROWLING of Ribstone.

Thankyou Vicky, I didn't know about the newspaper story but I found out from the death certs about the Rowling connection as the young Catherines mother was present at death.
I will chase up on the Leeds Mercury just as interest.

A bit of useless info, at an agricultural show I came across a pie stall. Voakes Pies of Whixley. Turns out it is Whixley Grange farm owned by Elizabeth and Sarah.

Thankyou for your help. Margaret
