We really need some more information in order to help you.

You mention a 1947 marriage certificate for your father-in-law on which John Bedworth's name is mentioned. Presumably he is named as the father of the groom.

Am I right in thinking that the groom was not himself using the surname Bedworth at marriage?  The reason I ask is that only two male Bedworths appear to have married in England & Wales during 1947 - both have births easily traceable on FreeBMD, according to which neither had a mother's maiden name of Smith.

If your father-in-law is no longer living, the provision of his name might be a useful clue - as would any indication of where in the country the family is likely to have been located.

he was born out of wedlock and kept his mothers maiden name,my father in law never knew his father and there is no father on his birth certificate.

they were living in knottingley west yorkshire.
on my father in laws marriage certificate the step father is down has john bedworth smith in brackets deceased.

this is a hard one
but with my grandmothers brother i only had his name and not much else and i found him.

Could she be the Doris Smith who married John Bedford, Mar 1929 Pontefract 9c 225?

Anna

I know you say your father in law kept his mother's maiden name of Smith and he was born out of wedlock, but I am intrigued with the marriage record Anna found and that I quote above, because Knottlingly is very close to Pontefract.

Ah - you didn't tell us about sisters!  All clues are invaluable.  There are indeed two female Bedworth births with mother's maiden name Smith in Pontefract, in 1932 and 1933 respectively.

Hmmm...

There are no Bedford births with mother's maiden name Smith in the area at the time, so I wonder whether John Bedworth's surname might indeed have been mis-recorded as Bedford at the time of marriage, or an error made in later transcription for the indexes?
