Any idea what this place was
« on: Monday 26 January 09 19:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone know what this place is/was, it was the address used in the 1911 census for my Harris family.

THE CHALET, STREETLEY LANE, FOUR OAKS, SUTTON COLDFIELD.

I have googled earthed the Lane it looks "very nice" but what's The Chalet

I have the same family living at 70 Lozells Road in the 1901 census, and from 1928 to 1937 still living at 70 Lozells road  ???

Regards
Ken

Could it not just be the name of 70 Lozells Road?   Not unusual for suburban houses to have both a name and a number.

The details from the 1911 census are those filled in by the householder, so maybe they had named the house themselves and preferred to use it rather than the number.

In 1901 you see what the enumerator wrote in his book - he would probably write the house number, even if it also had a name.

Sorry should have added

70 Lozells Road is in Aston Manor. The two addresses are a few miles apart.

As far as I can tell 70 Lozells Road was a butchers shop for years and years.

Hi :)

Could the family have been staying with relatives, perhaps, in 1911?

Maybe it was a fairly large house ~ many are in that area ~ that could accommodate them, if work was being done on their Lozells Road home, for example???

Is it possible to find out if anyone was at the Lozell Road address in 1911?
I have only been able to do surname searches, but I read that address searches were available.

In 1911 it was still a butchers shop. Just the shopman and a lodger there.

Just search on place using the tab above the search box.

I cannot help you on this one I am afraid but can give you background information.

I lived in Aston from 1950's to 1970's which sort of merged into Lozells.

Lozells and Aston were very "old" built up - villa type houses - whereas Streetly Lane and Four Oaks was (and still is) a very much more "up market" area.  Quite posh.

Mainly large, detatched fairly new houses - new in comparison with Lozells.

I would imagine that during the early 1900s Streetly Lane would have been quite rural.
The very opposite and nothing like Lozells.

Not sure if this helps you but may give you an insight.

Today you may find famous midland footballers living in Four Oaks, business men/women etc.
Houses in this area often have a name as well as a number.

If my memory serves me correctly when I worked at a Veterinary Clinic in Streetly  I am sure I had a client that lived at The Chalet, ?Streetly Lane, Four Oaks.

Family name Preston (of Birmingham)
Husselbe (Shropshire), Harper (Claverley, Stoke, Warwick, Birmingham) Lloyd (Shropshire & Birmingham) Pitt (Birmingham) Francis (Shropshire) Lloyd (Shropshire & Birmingham). Taylor (Birmingham).  Mellon(Mallon), Convery, Atchison (Gateshead & Ireland).

It's a shame my Dad passed away several years ago, as he might have been able to help.  My Mum adn Dad lived in Four Oaks when they got married, late 1940's, but sadly neither of them are around to ask.

The house I grew up in also had a house name as well as a number.  I think with a name like "The Chalet" it probably was a house that resembled a chalet, maybe a Swiss Chalet

I hope you find the answer you are looking for.
I am researching the following families:
Hurst / Payne - Leicestershire / Warwickshire / Worcestershire
Toon(e) - Leicestershire
Batchelor / Foster - Warwickshire / Northamptonshire
Hardy - Dorset

My web site has the family tree showing.  I am researching primarily the Payne, Hurst, Foster and Batchelor lines in the Midlands.
