Thanks Muffin had forgotten that one.
Looks promising George William Eyles and I know mine is illegitimate, which is generally what the missing maiden name means.

Hi All,

I've just had George William Eyles birth certificate arrive today. Details:

When & where born: 27/2/1856 Workhouse in district Lyncombe & Widcombe Bath Somerset
Father: blank
Mother: Lydia Eyles living at the Workhouse Bath
Informant: Lydia made her mark. (illiteracy would explain spellings of Eyles and Iles - both were
used by various families around Bath)

I now have no doubt this is our young William Iles/Stone.  I guess we will never know if William Stone was actually his father or just step father.

The short version of what happened to him after 1871 census:
At about 15/16 he walked from near Bath (Trowbridge I suppose) to London looking for work.
He found work as a french polisher once there and was employed in that field at the time of his marriage to Annie Brand in 1874. They had 7 children, the oldest being Annie Lydia Iles my great grandmother.
He later sold soft furnishings & lino through the streets of London from a barrow.
A number of years later he started a shop called "G.W. Iles & Sons" selling soft furnishings, linos, rugs etc. By the time of his retirement he had expanded the business to several shops.  George died 1947 Battersea London.

Hi 'JustStarting'

I am William and Martha great grandchild, descended from their son Arthur George, AND their daughters Bessie and Ada (it's a very long story!).

I have had a connection with another of Walter John's descendants in the past and wondered which of his children you are linked to?

I would be very keen to know if you have a photograph of William at all as I believe there is one floating around somewhere in a box in Trowbridge.

I have been working on the Stone Family History for about 10 years and have many times been at the point of publishing when along comes some more information that I have to check out.  Walter's is one photograph I do not have included and I wonder if there is any possibility you would send one to  me via email - if you have one of course.

Regards,
Jan.

Hi Jan,
Sounds very complicated! My grandmother is Brenda. I have a photo of Walter but not of William but I have only just started so who knows what I will find! I would love to check with you if I have all the Stone family info correct that I have so far. Also if you have any photos. I would also love to see all the Stone family info you have. How do we swap email addresses?
Kind Regards,
Tracey

Hi,

Just come across all these posts.

I am helping a friend with her family tree and George William Iles, born 27/2/1856, son of Lydia Eyles and William Stone, is her great grandfather.
George William married Annie Brand, and they had 7 children: Annie Lydia 1875, George William aka Bill 1877, Herbert 1879 (friend's grandfather), Florence Rosa 1881, Charles Arthur 1884, walter Alfred 1889, Frank Edwin 1890.

Walter Alfred died in 1892 but the rest survived and all married and had children.

Lydia Eyles is the daughter of Lancelot and Tryphena Iles nee Ollis who married 3/3/1834 Walcot St Swithins.

Hi All,

Updated info on Lydia, mother of George William Iles as the wrong info is on this thread.
Lydia is not the daughter of Lancelot Iles as he died in May 1836, even though he is listed as her father on her marriage to William Stone.

After much searching I have finally located Lydia's birth certificate which reads:
DOB: 2 November 1838 at Saltford    Name: Lydia Miller Iles Miller     female
Father: Edmund Miller (carpenter)   Mother: Tryphena Ollis formerly Iles now Miller.
Informant: Mother made mark. Registration district: Newton St Loe in Keynsham.

Although Tryphena states she is married to Edmund Miller, I have not yet found a marriage between them and when she does marry again in 1842, her surname is listed as Iles not Miller.
