Thompson Family 1871 census COMPLETE
« on: Sunday 25 January 09 23:34 GMT (UK) »
1871 census
Looking for James Thompson of  Redcar, a fisherman, (son of James).
1841 census age 3, 1851 age 15, 1861 age 23, so his dob could be from 1835 to 1838.

I think I have him in 1881 age 48(?) with wife Eleann 42 (born Staithes).  Trying to ascertain if this could be Ellen Verrill birth registered Whitby March quarter 1839

Many thanks

You mentioned Ellen Verrill as a possible wife
on BMD There is a Marriage for Ellen Dec q 1876 Whitby 9d 964 BUT BUT the possible Grooms are Robert Hutton or George Laverick
Cannot see one for James Thompson

Iagree with you 1881 it matches the 1871 I just sent you.

Hello Pam
Found on freebmd marriage of James Thompson - on the same page Lavinia Brown Smith, James Mitchell Steel and Ellen Verrill.  March quarter 1874 Guisborough.

Perhaps wife Eleann Thompson could be Lavinia??  However, Eleann stated as born Staithes and there is a birth registered in Whitby for an Ellen Verrill in March 1839.

Look like end of my thumb not working right now!

Where would Staithes births be registered, do you know?

Thanks for the 1871.

Many thanks for your help

Regards
Margaret

Staithes is a very pretty fishing village on the North Yorkshire coast, much visited by artists and photographers! It's postal address is Saltburn-by-the-sea, it's midway between Saltburn and Whitby. Staithes was part of the parish of Hinderwell.

Lickess- North Yorkshire, Middlesbrough.
Etherington - North Yorks and Durham.

Thanks Roobarb and Pam.

I am from Redcar originally, I agree with you Staithes is a very pretty village, just wondered which registration district it would have been in for a birth in the 1800s.

Have found the marriage of James Thompson to Ellen Verrill on the Middlesbrough indexes in 1874 registered Guisborough.  She was 42 1881 census and doesn't seem to be around in 1891.  (Unless she was visiting elsewhere?)  James and Ellen would be in their 30s when they married.  Of course - just to confusre things, I suppose Ellen could have been married before and Verrill was her married (widowed) name!

Thanks for your help

Regards
Margaret

Didn't realise you were a local Ceeoh!

Did you order the cert? Don't know if you are aware but the Register Office will confirm (or otherwise) details from the cert so that you know if you have the right one, you just fill in the form where it says to contatc them, next to the marriage entry. You could ask whether Ellen was widowed and for confirmation of Ellen's father's name to see if it was Verrill.

Ellen .. doesn't seem to be around in 1891
Hello

I think that she and James are living at 4 South Terrace, Redcar in 1891. She is listed as Eleanor. The census reference is RG12/3999 Folio 110 Page 27.

In 1901 they are both at the same address and she is shown as Ellen. The census reference is RG13/4570 Folio 19 Page 30.
