Hi, Clive -

Sorry to dust off such an old thread, but I couldn't seem to PM you.

I think the John Moore (shoemaker) you mention is my great-great-great-grandfather. My grandfather's father was the son of John Conlon and Margaret Moore, who were married in Rathfriland in 1864. On their marriage certificate, Margaret (aged 17 at the time) lists her father and his occupation as John Moore, a shoemaker. I have John's death certificate, but have not yet been able to obtain information on when (and to who) he was married, or when he was born (all I have to go on there is the age given on his death certificate.)

Hopefully we have the same John Moore and can be of some help to each other.

Hello!
It was in fact 2009 when I first posted this request! I've forgotten all about it.
John Moore's children were Thomas, Margaret, Mary, Sarah and Bridget. In his will, dated 1873, he writes that the latter three daughters were already in America. (I'd love to know what happened to them).
I believe that John and Catherine X were married in 1845, so Margaret might well have been 17 years old in 1864 at her marriage. I thought her husband was John "someone", but I didn't have his surname. If you don't have John Moore's will I'll share the contents with you.
Fingers crossed!

Oh that'd be great if you could share his will! In case you don't know, his daughter Margaret died in her 40s in 1888, and she was living in Belfast at that point. At PRONI recently I found a listing for John Moore in the 1864 directory as having a shoe-making shop on Downpatrick Street in Rathfriland. In the 1877 directory, the shop is then being run by Thomas Moore, who I assume was his son.

I am new to this site and have just looked at your post.
Rathfriland has a local newspaper the "outlook" (don't know when it was launched).
Locals also use a Banbridge paper think it's the "leader"
Don't know if this helps
