please could someone help me.I am trying to find orbit for december 1890 the death cert, says upper merthyr tydfil she died in 28th. dec. 1890 her name was sarah rees she was a widow to william rees licensed victualler and she died in 32 brecon road.
 are there any newspapers out in merthyr around the time of her death. As i am trying to see if the orbit would name any siblings or parens.
any help appreciated jere.

Hello Jere,
   My great grandparents lived in Dowlais he died in a pit accident in 1908.
   The local libary is invaluable at supplying information.
   The historian there emailed me the actaul details of the accident that was
   printed in the Merthyr Express.
   Do give them a ring or email them I am sure they will help you.

I did reply recently to your enquiry but I have a feeling that you did not get the message. I have not yet got the hang of dealing with messages. I will have to check the hints and help pages on this site.

Briefly, my gt.grandparents were William and Sarah Rees (nee Scott). As you already know, she did die in 1890 at 32 Brecon Road where her daughter Mary Dinah Wiliams (nee Scott) lived with her husband Benjamin Williams, a Saddler.

Sarah's father was a William Jones, who was a butcher and who was born in Breconshire abt 1794. I am still trying to find out more about him. If I do find out I will get back to you.

I too was wondering if there was an obituary for Sarah in the local newspapers. Unfortunately I do not live in Wales so am unable to check the Merthyr Library.

thanks for the 'clue' re newspaper - we're looking for (we think) great, great grandfather who was given title Mabon and lived in Merthyr Tydfil area late 1800s-early 1900s. is it possible to access paper online as we're not resident in UK or Europe? There was a miners leader with the name 'Mabon'. Access to 19 Century Newspapers are available to those who have a membership with a library in Wales. Perhaps similar access is available overseas.

William 'Mabon' Abraham 1842-1922

Born Cwmavon, Port Talbot. Began work in the mines at the age of 10 and continued there until in the mid 1860s he travelled to Chile to work in the copper mines. On his return he worked briefly in the tinplate industry before resuming work in the coal mining industry.

He became closely involved in trade unionism and politics and became M.P. for the Rhondda in 1885. In 1899 he was elected as first president of the South Wales Miners’ Federation. Became known as Mabon in his early adulthood, a Bardic name, and was known as this throughout his career.
