Hi Aghadowney
I was not referring to the IGI but to the new free access on familysearch site to index to all Irish BMDs.It gives births up to 1958.There appear to be a few teething problems as it is a pilot project, but in general it's complete.GRO reference numbers are given with each record.

Yes, but I was pointing out that some of the early Irish births are already in IGI and give names of parents and exact date of birth although place is usually registration district and not the townland.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Carol and Leofric

having bashed away at it for most of yesterday, getting lots of USA results while looking for Irish ones, I think I've got the answer? maybe?

Never choose "New search" always choose "refine search",even if you're changing everything - seems to work for me

Yeah....some success which I wasn't expecting ;D

3x greatgrandmother Catherine Duncan remarried in 1850, luckily whoever transcribed the index reference also included her maiden name of Finlay too!

I could so easily have passed over this one without a second glance!  ;D ;D ;D
no sign of the first husband's death though!  :o

now this is definitely a cert I need to buy as it will take me back another generation!

RE searching for records after 1922, I believe that these are not available for Northern Ireland, just for the Republic for Ireland.

More info can be found by going to the homesearchpage and clicking on europe, then going to the very bottom of the listings and clicking on Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes.

There should be a description of the information held therein.

Hope that helps - it doesn't seem to link at all!

I went on the site on Saturday when it first came on line.

Images were there then and I found it much easier to look at these as well as the transcription. You could even page back and forth in the indexes for each year to browse them. It was a bit slow understandably.

When I went on again yesterday the images were not coming up so I would imagine they have taken then down for now as they were getting so many hits and the site was being slowed down too much. The full images have been scanned and are of excellent quality and I am sure will reappear shortly.

Yes it is not perfect and will have teething problems for some time but I am so thankful this wonderful resource is now on line so I have no complaints, only praise.

Deirdre, the images were taken down due to the fact that LDS were only licensed to show them for a short period. They are working on getting them available again.

Oaks and Acorns (Dara) thankyou for explaining that.

Seems like the license was for 48 hours only - anyway I am grateful I manged to look the the images on the first day, it really enhances the experience of searching.

There is a link on the search results page explaining how to read the results which opens up in Adobe and gives examples of the images themselves so this would indicate they definitely intend to make them available some time again. (Let us hope it is not in the too distant future).

Under PPS I've just stuck in my page and volume number  ??? 4 and 117
and under date I've written June 1/4 of 1923 and specified only if dad is XXX

I've also ticked for a cheaper 6 euro photocopy as this is my hubby's aunt (I hope!)

Good luck Perth,we'll have to compare notes. ;)

Of course I've now got to post the damn thing as I don't have access to a Fax machine.
