family history name search
« on: Saturday 24 January 09 23:22 GMT (UK) »
Seeking information regarding death dates and parents of James Wellington who married Martha Wrigley.1901 Scotland census states birth date for James abt 1849 and has him listed as Army pensioner.Martha is listed with birth date in 1891 census abt 1852.I am also looking to see where I can obtain any service records for James. They lived in Dunbar and he was with the Royal Artillery.Could anyone please explain the term  in the 1891 census "Soldier B P Major".What rank was this exactly?Thankyou. Erika

Hi Erika,

James Wellington died August 14th 1901 at Castle Street, Dunbar. He was a Sergeant in the Royal Artillery. His parents were James Wellington, tailor (dec.) and Mary Ann Wellington, m.s. Eddo. Martha registered his death at Dunbar.

She herself died in 1907 at nearby Haddington, aged 55.

hume :)

Thanks once again Hume. This allows me to trace back a little further especially with his parents names and mothers maiden name which I was having trouble locating.Have tried to purchase credits with a Scottish genealogy site but not having much luck formalising payment for credits .Therefore the information you were able to obtain has been a great help.Cheers Erika

hi Erika  :) (good work hume  ;) )

don't know if you have this -

i see from the 1881 scotland census that they had 3 children -
95 high st(grahams close) dunbar haddington
james h 5 born england
bertha 3 born ireland
arthur i(or l ? or j ?) 1 born ireland

IGI HAS -

bertha wellington born 27th april 1877 carlisle fort cork ireland
parents james wellington & martha begley(?) wellington

arthur john wellington born 11th nov. 1879 queenstown no2 cork ireland
parents james wellington & martha wrigley

might help you track his army service

there is also from freeBMD -
james henry wellington birth 4th quarter 1875 woolwich england
as you probably know the royal artillery had strong connections with woolwich

Thanks Ev,
Didn't have the birth places for those children. Also grateful for the Royal artillery site as I had been looking for something to try and trace postings for James and the family. My Fathers mother is Daisy, listed in the 1891 census. She and her sister Sarah came to Audtralia and marrried two Gledhill brothers in Victoria. Will, a baby mentioned in this census also came to Australia in later years and lived with my grandmother.Don't quite know if he ever married or what happened to the other children on that census. Will follow that all up.Thanks again for your assistance.Everyone who has been kind enough to assist with my searches has taught me lots and I do appreciate it. Cheers Erika.

Hi Hume,
Still on the trail of James Wellington's parents.Wondered if you could tell me where you came across the info you passed on in your last post regarding James Wellington and Mary Ann Eddo?Further searches have indicated that James Wellington's {born 1849 died 1901} father was actually a Henry Wellington birth date abt 1823.As for Mary Ann Eddo we have not had any luck at all tracing her birth or parentage.I know I am not too knowledgeable regarding available search fields  but I have struck a blank in regards to this surname.Have tried the name Eddy in case there has been a miss print somewhere with the transcribing but once again no luck!If you or anyone else could point me in the  right direction with this search I would be much obliged. Have found a complete war service record for James son, James H Wellington born 1875, but once again no such luck for his father. This is my next challenge.Cheers Erika.
