Thanks Diane, I will take a look at your tree on Ancestry. I’m in Canada, so I’m not as far afield as you are, but I appreciate the difficulty of remote research.

Thanks for that.  Timothy and Family are not too hard to find but the parents are the difficult ones. I think they were so poor they were in the work house hospital.  I have tried ringing the cemeteries with no luck.  I have a death cert for Michael Flyng but not for Hannah or daughter Catherine. However I will try the papers and see what I can find.  I have the feeling that Timothy was more affluent than the rest of the family.

I think you hit the nail on the head with that... I just found another Want Ad he ran in the Western Daily Press  Wednesday 15 May 1861:

WANTED, immediately, a Good COOK, also a HOUSE and PARLOUR-MAID. Neither under 30 years of age. They must both thoroughly understand their duties.  None with written characters need apply. - For address apply to Mr Flyng, Tailor, Nicholas Street, Bristol.

I'd settle for any one of those!

The 1871 Census has a Hannah Flynn, age 80, born 1791, Cork Ireland living in the Bristol City Workhouse, Fishponds, Stapleton.
There is a death registration for a Hannah Flynn the following year, registered in Clifton, which encompassed the area of Stapleton, and lists her age at 81.

Maybe that's her?

Thanks bbart, that’s stellar. It really helps to flesh things out with Timothy’s family. Plus a good lead on Hannah. Very exciting!

Hi. I'm a Flyng and am having problems progressing back further than 1902! A bit pathetic, but I am new to this...! My father was Kenneth Charles Flyng born 1/9/1927 in Bristol of Carson and Lilian Flyng (nee Price). Carson was one of twins born in 1902. His brother was William. Mr father had a stillborn (I think) brother called Carson born 1932 and a sister  (DOB inknown), who married  and had two kids - a boy and a girl.
My mother was a Nettle, also of Bristol, and born 24/1/1927 to Frederick and Gladys Audrey Nettle (nee Nott). She had a sister named Thelma born 1925. And that is all I have - any help would be very gratefully received!!! No-one in this post (apart from me) is alive.

I just wanted to address the part I quoted in bold:
There is a newspaper article in the Western Daily Press dated 21 Nov 1933 which reads -

Fatally Scalded
The story of a child's death from scalds
was told at an inquest held yesterday by the
Bristol City Coroner, Mr A. E. Barker, on
Carson Flyng, aged 21 months, whose
parents live at Ilminster Avenue, Knowle.
The child, unseen, drank from a teapot and
was scalded.  A doctor was called and the
child later died on the way to the Bristol
General Hospital.  Death was due to
asphyxia and a verdict of "Accidental
death" was returned.

Costumier I hope you still are searching for information for the Flyng family history. I have in my possession a Bible presented to William C Flyng of 3 Nicholas St. Bristol as a birthday present on February 18th 1862 from a Philip Harris. It was in old family documents of my mothers. Please respond if you are still searching.

gitane59, I would be very interested in the Bible you mentioned, as William Carson Flynn was my great, great grandfather. His daugther, Elizabeth Emily Flynn, married my great grandfather, Ernest Kingdon.

Does the Bible contain any family information or interesting notes? I am always curious about the personality of my ancestors.

Hi I have determined that William Carson Flyng and Maria Flyng (nee Stevens) is also my GG grandfather.
Their Daughter Charlotte (Lotty) married me G Grandfather John Reed.

My only problem with all this is the date in the bible indicates his birth year was 1862 and all the records and trees that I can find indicate he was born in 1852.
Since I know from the headstone that Charlotte Flyng was born 1872 it makes sense that her father was born 1852 not 1862 as the bible seems to indicate.
The fine script writing in the bible is very clear and I have had others read and confirm that the date as written is Feb 18th 1862.
Any help that allows us to clarify these dates helps us all I believe. Thanks
