portrait painter
« on: Saturday 24 January 09 21:09 GMT (UK) »
Good morning,

The 1830 Pigot's directory has my 3x gr. grandfather John Brothill as a painter

of portraits and ornamentals in Holt, Norfolk.

In a later directory he has become a painter, plasterer and glazier, so probably not so good at portraits!

My question is, how can I find out if he ever painted anything of note?

I did once try 'googling'  Brothill artist, after which my computer needed some
serious repairs!

Any help appreciated

I think it is fair to say that John Brothill (extraordinary name!) didn't make it as a portrait painter. We have got a lot of reference books on artists of the Victorian period and he doesnt feature, sadly.
I hope someone can give you some better news!
Best wishes

Hi CMS

Thankyou for that.

He ended up selling artist supplies and (I think) painting pub signs and the like.

It is an extraordinary name, occupational apparantly!

Cheers
