army records
« on: Tuesday 20 April 04 18:10 BST (UK) »
Just started tracing family tree.  My great grandad was in the army, and obviously moved about a bit.  Not much is known about him.   My nan or dad cant remember his name.   Grandad came from Devonshire.   As a long shot i tried seaching on 1901 census,  at a guess that great grandad might of been 12 in 1901,  but nothing came up,  for any Blood's in Devon area.  Am awaiting birth certificate of Grandad to find out his dads name.   But in meantime (as im getting addicted, and impatient),  is there a way of checking army records.

Many thanks for any help given.

Josie

Hello Josie,

If he was in WW1 and his name appears on the medal index cards then this might be a start to find a possible regiment or corps.

Go to http://www.documentsonline.pro.gov.uk/default.asp then go to WW1 Campaign Medals and click on Search the medals or similar.
There are 225 Bloods recorded - this is for Army - not navy, flying corps etc. I advise you not to start spending money on them (yet) until you find something more concrete name wise. There is very little information on them  anyway as the examples show.

Anyone else looking in theses surnames are being rolled out during this year - I think we are up to E ?

Someone else on this group  may well advise you better than I have so far.

There is also a soldier's paper search at The PRO but if, as you say, he was 12yrs of age in 1901, then perhaps not as I think these cover people were discharged befoe 1913 or arounf there.

Good luck

Another thought, if he was in in WW1 have a look at http://www.1914-1918.net/index.htm  and look at at How to research a soldier (top left).  This site also has a very popular  discussion group.

Also there is link on this group that should help http://www.rootschat.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=47;action=display;threadid=3052
