« on: Saturday 24 January 09 05:29 GMT (UK) »
My Ancestor was listed as an Inkeeper from Bramshott Hampshire at his death in 1739. This location might include Liphook and I am looking for help in locating the particular Inn
Thank You
Norman

Hi Norman,

There are quite a few inns/pubs currently listed in Liphook (Deers Hut, Royal Anchor, Caladonian South, Green Dragon, Links, Rising Sun, William Wynne)however, finding which, if any, existed in the 1700's is proving difficult. The Deers Hut dates from the 1600's but was originally a hunting lodge.

There is a Bramshott and Liphook Preservation Society that can be contacted with enquiries at 12 London Road, Liphook, Hampshire GU30 7AN (can't find a website for them).

Is Nicholas Elkins the particular Innkeeper you're interested in? If so, is this website of any interest: www.lewcock.net/genealogy/ It contains Nicholas and descendants.

Dear Erica
Thank you for your response re Inns at Bramshott/Liphook. Somwhere I have a reference to Inkeepers and Public Houses. When I find it and it was over 10 years ago I used it, it could lead somewhere. Nicholas the inkeeper is my oldest known relative c 1680.. I am aware of the Lewcock site. The Preservation Society have been very unhelpful to me in the past. I have written twice with stamped and addressed envelopes enclosed and got no response. If you have been successful I will try again. My Nicholas when living at Bramshott made an Annual Poor law Tax Contrubution of 4s2p. This was in a scale descending fom 2 Guineas down to 8p. So to my surprise he wasn't at the bottom of society.
Kindest regards
Norman
