Hi Anne,

The only clue I can see is that Joseph BRATT who John is with in 1841 maybe related.  Here he is in 1851, HO107 2246/83 Page 24, Castle Street, Wardleworth:

Josh BRATT, Head, Mar, 41, Boiler Maker born Cheshire Hover [Possible OVER]
Mary BRATT, Dau, U, 18, Factory Operative born Manchester
James BRATT, Son, 15, Boiler Maker born St Helens
Josh BRATT, Son, 11, Boiler Maker [dittoed from above] born Royton

I wonder if Joseph is John's brother?

Jean

PS. My Schofield line is in the Oldham/Ashton area of Lancs as far as I have got with them

Hi Jean,

Yes I thought the same, and I do believe that I did look at this census entry at one time although I did not record it, also John and Ellen Bratt had a daughter named Hannah probably named after the wife of Joseph and a son named Joseph, although the English do not appear to follow the Scotish and Irish habit of naming their children.

I think I have an angle on 'Newchurch'. The church of St John The Evangelist was built in the 1860s in part of Over, Cheshire, standing between the established parish of St Chad, Over, and Whitegate. the church was widely known locally as 'the new church'. THis might explain why John refers to Newchurch for the first time in 1871. Over is the centre of a cluster of Bratts, going back to Thomas Bratt and Sarah Hopley, who moved there from Bunbury in the second half of the eighteenth century. In turn they were an offshoot of the Bratts of Tarporley, many of whom were blacksmiths. I havent looked myself, but I suspect the registers of St Chad Over might help solve this one

Thats very interesting, i have checked with Cheshire Council and found that  John Bratt was baptised at Over on 9 April 1820, son of Mary Bratt  and I have obtained the parish record, there is no mention of the father at all anywhere other than the mention on Johns marriage certificate in Hull and states his father is also a john Bratt (boilermaker)and still living at that time???? could you help find any of his info?

I have a weath of info on the Bratts now from John bratt 1821 onwards if anyone need it let me know
