Briscoe in Dublin

In 1846 & 1870 there are a few Briscoe entries around Birr and Banagher.

I do not know about Birr,  but,  how many Briscoes can be in the same business and not be related, especially since it is an unusual  name in Ireland.   Patrick married in Mountmellick in 1900 and he was well known in that area, that is, my mother was told that she looked liked the Briscoes.

Birr would only be about 35km to the west of Mountmellick - so I'd say it's possible

I agree it would be quite a  coincidence for there to be two seperate families with the same quite rare surnames in exactly the same business without some sort of connection.

Some of my ancestors are from Birr/Parsonstown at this time (1847) and moved to Dublin soon after.

There appears to be a lot by that name in trade of one kind and another which is a rather unusual distribution for the name.    My grandfather was not in trade, he helped to lay the tram lines in the City of Glasgow.    It is a pity that Michael Briscoe did not live to 1901 or I could find out where he was born, Irish marriage certificates do not give proper ages.    I could not find Thomas Joseph Dowman, Patrick's half brother in the 1901 census of Scotand or England he may have ben in Ireland.   I do know that Margaret Jennings was alive in 1901, as the marriage certificate of Thomas Joseph Dowman in 1904  in Scotland states that his father was dead, his mother,
Maggie Weir, prior Dowman, prior Briscoe, nee Jennings was alive.     The 1901 Irish census of Dublin should be on line sometime this year, so maybe I will be lucky and find out where she was born.

By the way, don't get misled by the prominent family of Irish politicians called Briscoe.  They are descended from Lithuanian immigrants and adopted Briscoe instead of their original surname (probably Cherrick).

My family is from Bolton and at one time wondered if there was any connection with the 17th Century Rev Michael Briscoe who came over from Ireland and was a Minister nearby for a time before moving to Toxteth Old Chapel but he does not seem to have left any male descendants which is a pity because he had an interesting history.

Also wondered if there is any connection between the Briscoe in Ireland and the Cumberland family who did have land in Ireland but I am inclined to think that the name just appeared in several areas independently.  Just wish there was some more Briscoe DNA to compare with!
